Although dating back to medieval times the deer park we see today owes much to John and later to William. This was the parkland surrounding their seat, Studley Royal House and was laid out to provide a beautiful scene with long distant views to Ripon Cathedral and the Vale of York. The Deer Park is now owned by the The National Trust.

The public has the chance to experience some of North Yorkshire’s most spectacular scenery as part of a re-established circular walk being published this month, which follows a 250 year old route created by William Aislabie through his estates at Studley Royal, Laver Banks and Hackfall. On Sunday 6th May 2012 a small group from local running club, Ripon Runners. Set off to see how fast they could complete the Aislabie Walk. Their Chairman, retired GP Chris Bennett did a recce of the route previously. The following week he persuaded two other members to tackle the course with him. Filed under: record time.

This is not a particularly challenging walk from a terrain point of view. The majority of the route is relatively flat or undulating and is on footpaths, bridleways and tracks across fields and through woodland. There are some steeper sections and some of the paths are muddy during and after rainfall.
