ArcticRaptors.ca Blog: What?? F.p. anatundrium and F.p. tundriassini??

http://blog.arcticraptors.ca/2012/06/what-fp-anatundrium-and-fp-tundriassini.html

Saturday, June 23, 2012. Fp anatundrium and F.p. tundriassini? Of course there's no such thing as F.p. anatundrium. Or Fp tundriassini,. But for a little fun and to emphasize variation in plumage within sub-species even at small scales, I thought I'd post some images of 2 birds that were trapped one after the other at our study area in Rankin Inlet this spring, and assign an "invented" sub-specific name to them based on appearance and breeding range. A fourth sub-species ( F.p. cassini. Photo: Miguel Sag...

Tuesday, April 17, 2012. For arctic nesting Peregrine Falcons we know that late arrival. Male ground squirrels are among the first resident prey to appear in the spring. Snow Buntings are almost always the first migrant prey, often arriving ahead of peregrines (G.Court). A falcon known as Island Girl (see Falcon Research Group Blog. That winters in Chile and spends her summers on Baffin Island, Nunavut began her inward migration April 14, 2012. Her departure date in each of the 4 migration years that she...

Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Joe's Hag Heads South. Joe's Hag left her breeding cliff in the 3rd week of September and started south for a yet-to-be-determined wintering location somewhere on the South American continent.maybe through Padre Island in the middle of October again as she did last year. Southward, first stop South Hampton Island. For some, one storm interrupts a breeding attempt completely. The landscape below Joe's Hag's cliff (photo B. Robinson). Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Wandering and wondering in Fulham. Friday, 16 April 2010. Kestrel among the tombstones. On my way to the shops via Margravine Cemetery 2 afternoons ago, I was walking via the grass as mostly usual when I noticed at the edge of, but slightly out, a big group of pigeons another bird which I took initially for one of those weird colour pigeons. We don't have many in the cemetery, most are fairly classic, but we still have a few like this one:. On the ground in the cemetery! It then flew from tree to tree, p...

Welcome to ArcticRaptors.ca. The Arctic Raptor Project builds on the success of a long-term project that examined the toxicology and breeding biology of Peregrine Falcons at Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. The research program relies on well-established partnerships with the Government of Nunavut, the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, ArcticNet Network of Centers of Excellence, the Canadian Circumpolar Institute at the University of Alberta and the University du Quebec Rimouski. Arctic Raptors - Image Gallery. We use state-of-the-art RECONYX motion sensitive cameras to record breeding phenology (lay dates, initiation of incubation, hatch dates) and to identify causes of nestling mortality. In addition, we mark (unique alphanumeric color bands) all nestlings and as many adults as possible in an effort to estimate survival and recruitment. We are often able to identify individuals by reading bands from photographs of birds on nest ledges.

Sunday, June 2, 2013. Coincidence - maybe not. Watching “Island Girl” (a female Peregrine Falcon tagged by FRG. In 2009) migrate northward for the 5th consecutive year, it's difficult not to be charmed by her. By combining efforts across research teams, she and other PTT- or otherwise-tagged birds have disclosed a few more of the nifty migratory tricks used by peregrines flying to and from the breeding grounds. Sunday, June 02, 2013. Links to this post. Saturday, March 16, 2013. A full decription of the ...
