In summer my top choices shrink considerably since I don't like to hike in hot weather. Boardwalk on Johnstone Trail, a marvel of engineering. Tomales Bay State Park. Remains on my short list all year; I actually prefer it when the rest of the Bay Area is baking. Very few other destinations can match Tomales Bay's summer beauty.

Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Duh, it's summer. At noon I dropped my son off at day camp and headed north. My destination was Old St. Hilary's Preserve in Tiburon, but as I eased through the Golden Gate Bridge traffic I realized I'd have to alter my plans - the north bay was overhung with haze. Monday, August 3, 2015. Hazelnut Trail at San Pedro Valley Park. When my son was just a few weeks old, he visited San Pedro Valley Park for the first time, snuggled in an infant carrier. As he grew, we'd venture up and down the Valley View Loop. Often I'd have to carry him back to car, but his stamina increased rapidly. By 4, he was able to complete the Waterfall Loop.
