Thursday, May 14, 2015. Mars Invaders: The Wonderful World of Microfungi. In 1897, a monumental work appeared in print for the first time. It was a story of invasion. It was a story of war. Thomas Nuttall, the great 19th-century naturalist. 8217;s crew christened Mr. Nuttall “Old Curious” from his zeal for curiosities, and some of them said he was crazy, and that his friends let him go about and amuse himself in this way.” William Henry Dana, Two Years before the Mast. In the Company of Plants and Rocks: Welcome to my yard, leafcutter bee!
http://plantsandrocks.blogspot.com/2014/06/welcome-to-my-yard-leafcutter-bee.html
In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Sunday, June 22, 2014. Welcome to my yard, leafcutter bee! Entrance to nest is in the end of the shorter tie. The leaf fragments this bee brought back were larger than the ones I saw last time, and she had to fold them to carry them. From Leafcutter Bees Fact Sheet. Colorado State University Extension. But I think these holes are too small. They may be the work of leafcutter bees, but apparently not the one I was watching. Do you recognize the bee’s leaf? It has serrat...

In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Friday, March 27, 2015. Portraits of Plants and Rocks. This is a story of light,. Specifically light inside a box,. Specifically light inside a light box, which I made. The project began a little over two weeks ago when I saw Amanda Peters’s beautiful photos of larch cones. I asked her about them, as did others, and she then explained the process. Maybe it's time to start checking photo histograms. My light source was sunlight through a window. But the day was only...

In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Thursday, December 25, 2014. Best Wishes from Plants and Rocks. Lanceleaf cottonwood, Laramie River. Expression is the need of my soul (archy). And we keep doing it . for diverse and mysterious reasons. Maybe when we tell stories we make memories more vivid and lasting. I learn a lot from bloggers – about botany, ecology, geology, photography, places to go, things to see – all of it spiced up with excitement and enthusiasm. Used to be I had a small circ...When Lucy sug...
In the Company of Plants and Rocks: Winter Tree Following: cottonwood, juniper, willow
http://plantsandrocks.blogspot.com/2015/03/winter-tree-following-cottonwood.html
In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Saturday, March 7, 2015. Winter Tree Following: cottonwood, juniper, willow. Cottonwood twigs collected in January are leafing out – indoors. In the wild, leaves won't appear until late May. It’s time to part with my cottonwood. I was searching for a suitable juniper in the foothills just east of town. They’re common, especially on rockier slopes and in draws. We walked up a small dry draw with a box canyon at the head. Rocky Mountain juniper, Juniperus scopulorum.

In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Saturday, February 28, 2015. Plants in the Abstract. There’s a photographic world somewhere between realism and pure abstraction where I love to be. Traditional subjects are secondary, upstaged by things usually overlooked: light, form, pattern, arrangement. These. Become the subject, the message. 8220;Realism and abstraction can be seen as the two ends of a continuum. On one end, photographic realism mimics the appearance of a recognizable subject. On the othe...Devil...

In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Friday, January 16, 2015. The sandstone that fooled the great geologists (but the younger generation needs to understand). Flaming Gorge Reservoir from the canyon rim. They say that at night their spirits walk the rims, staring at the water 1300 feet below, trying to rescue drowning memories. I camped on the rim last fall and sure enough, around midnight two voices woke me from a deep sleep. But they weren’t speaking Ute. I peeked out of the tent but saw only trees and...
