Sunday, August 31, 2014. Cockpit-Fest USA, 2014. Every Year around Labor Day, Lancaster Airport, the Commemorative Air Force. And the Cold War Air Museum. Open house for the public to come and see rare and unusual aircraft and learn about aviation history. In addition to featured exhibits, static displays and flights of historic aircraft, a new event this year was Cockpit-Fest, USA. The detail work in the cockpits and simulators is amazing. The MiG-21 was designed as a replacement for the MiG-15 following the experiences of the Korean War. Prototypes were first flown in 1955. Mikoyan designed a small, light airframe with a triangular delta wing shape which requires less power to achieve Mach 2 but which also gives less space for fuel or sophisticated radar systems. Even more interesting is the collection of formerly-classified aircraft evaluation documents that the museum obtained from the U.S. Department of Defense via Freedom of Information requests. The museum is sorting through how these documents should be organized and made available on the web. This is no small task — the MiG-23.

The Cold War Air Museum is a non-profit educational institution whose mission is to exhibit, educate, and eternalize the role that Cold War aircraft, pilots, and other personnel had during this conflict. In addition to flying aircraft, related artifacts, artwork and library resources are used to perpetuate the history of this period. A portion of the 45,000 sq. ft. museum is a working restoration facility which is actively returning many Cold War era aircraft.
