Hildeblog: December 2012

http://blog.davidhildebrand.org/2012_12_01_archive.html

A place where words and pixelated light befoul one another. A holiday exculpation for Facebook. One might wonder, after all, what all these comments and quips on FB amount to? What lasting impact do they have? Ah, but then one walks through the stacks of an old library or sees unending lists of films (available on Netflix, etc.) that never made it. Everything crumbles to dust eventually, so the wish for immortality via the production of cultural objects is hopeless- and narcissistic, to boot. Ok, enough ...

A place where words and pixelated light befoul one another. Against the Sunk Costs Argument for MOOC's and the Expansion of Online Education. There was a line in the book Alone Together. By Sherry Turkle that encapsulated, roughly, what's at the heart of my concern about MOOC's, online, etc. When we make a job rote, we are more open to having machines do it. But even when people do it, they and the people they serve feel like machines.". This is not a wholesale argument for or against any specific thing&...

A place where words and pixelated light befoul one another. Anakin kills younglings in Star Wars III - After Newtown, an intolerable cinematic moment. Post-Newtown, it was a bit disturbing to watch Star Wars III (Revenge of the Sith) with my 9 year old and come across the scene in which a 20 year old Anakin Skywalker go into the Jedi pre-school to kill all the "younglings" as his final task before becoming Darth Vader. A place where words and pixelated light befoul one another. Technology, Education, and the Chalkboard: Braking Technology before Technology Breaks Learning. I've been thinking a bit more about Mark Edmundson’s piece in the NYT: "The Trouble With Online Education". Http:/ www.nytimes.com/2012/07/20/opinion/the-trouble-with-online-education.html? This cultural preoccupation with devices, with technology, is part of a larger deterioration of meaning, what Nick Carr calls "the shallows" or what Albert Borgma...

American Philosophy: October 2006

http://americanphilosophy.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Philosophy in the American Context. Tuesday, October 31, 2006. Code, Weinberg, Nichols, and Stich. A quick story to relate, then out of town for a few days. Several weeks ago we read Lorraine Code's "Taking Subjectivity Into Account" in my epistemology class. The reception, to put it nicely, was frosty. Many students took exception to her claim that mainstream epistemology represents the biases of wealthy white males (which is pretty much the wording she uses). Then a couple of weeks ago we read this.

American Philosophy: January 2007

http://americanphilosophy.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Philosophy in the American Context. Wednesday, January 17, 2007. What Makes a "Good" Philosophy Department? The New York Times had an article. About the Philosophical Gourmet Report. It focuses primarily on Rutgers' high ranking which, I suppose, might surprise some people who are more familiar thinking of Rutgers as New Jersey's state university. (People at my high school in New Jersey would always say, condescendingly, about Rutgers "Oh, that's a good. To this as follows:. I'm not quite sure what Stuhr...

American Philosophy: February 2007

http://americanphilosophy.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Philosophy in the American Context. Sunday, February 18, 2007. I've been thinking more about rankings after reading some comments on Berit Brogaard's blog. One question is whether there's an alternative to the Leiter Report. Now, some people do love the Leiter Report, but others find it hopelessly biased. Here's some food for thought. I hadn't heard of this Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. So what are the highest ranking philosophy departments? 6 UC San Diego. 9 SUNY Stony Brook. This is a new gener...

American Philosophy: September 2006

http://americanphilosophy.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

Philosophy in the American Context. Monday, September 25, 2006. Lorraine Code: Taking Subjectivity Into Account. Two thoughts occurred to me after today’s discussion of Code’s article Taking Subjectivity Into Account. The first is that her point can be boiled down to a very plausible set of claims, something like the following: It’s a mistake to define objectivity in terms of value neutrality. Why? It’s to listen to people who don’t think like us: that’s an effective way of weeding out persistent bias.

American Philosophy: August 2006

http://americanphilosophy.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html

Philosophy in the American Context. Monday, August 28, 2006. Soames on Analytic Philosophy in America. Scott Soames has posted a piece on the history of analytic philosophy in the U.S. ( here. There's been some discussion of it on the Leiter blog, as well. At first I was going to write a critical post, but then I read some of the comments on the Leiter blog and decided not to play that. So here's one thing I like a lot about Soames' piece, and a couple of points where he gets things wrong. 3) Soames also...

David Hansford – Out and About with my Camera

Out and About with my Camera. Written by David in Landscape. Asymp; 0 Comments. This is going back a while as this photograph was taken ten years ago in Normandy. Flat landscapes are not normally my thing but in this instance I spotted the scene whilst walking before breakfast whilst we were staying near Bayeux. I took just one shot, hearing that load distinctive sound as the shutter fired. That was all that was needed. I was using my Canon 1DS Mk3 with the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens set at its widest setting.

Running The Race

A runner’s journal. The Power of a Group. March 21st, 2012. One of the things I have always liked about running is the singularity of the sport. If I want to go run, I don’t have to find a partner or make a tee time. I can walk out the front door and run. Last year I started working the training programs at the local Fleet Feet. Store I have enjoyed running with a group and encouraging and coaching them. This morning I ran with a group that I knew would push me. It was great. January 9th, 2012. May 1st, ...
