Not Just Another PhD: Hitting the Wall
http://notjustanotherphd.blogspot.com/2012/02/hitting-wall.html
Not Just Another PhD. Monday, 27 February 2012. I think I've hit the metaphorical wall. I keep questioning it, thinking this is surely far to early in my PhD career to be experiencing such things, but they're there nonetheless. And to clarify, I'm not freaking out, I'm not upset, worried or anxious, I'm not angry or stressed. I'm just. tired. I know I still love my research. I'm still glad to be doing a PhD - research is still what I want to do for the rest of my life! How did you get through it? Early i...

It’s probably safe to say I enjoy political discussions, interesting similes and metaphors, and magic more than the average person. Penn Jillette’s recent column in the Wall Street Journal had all those things. It’s an interesting read about suspension of disbelief and how … Continue reading →. Magic in the News. Not Just Another PhD: April 2014
http://notjustanotherphd.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Not Just Another PhD. Monday, 21 April 2014. This week is my last week in the department. My last ever Monday sitting at this desk, looking out the window across the city, thinking about coffee time at 11am. This is the last 'first day of the week' in what has been my home from home for the last three years. I never thought I'd be sad about getting over a Monday, but today is teaching me the meaning of 'bittersweet'. Wednesday, 2 April 2014. Until I hand in my thesis, and 27 days. I do know, though, that...

Not Just Another PhD: The final countdown....
http://notjustanotherphd.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-final-countdown.html
Not Just Another PhD. Wednesday, 2 April 2014. It seems like my last post should be much longer ago than January. Life is just so busy. As a third year PhD student. But, now I have an afternoon to breathe, I wanted to write some more. Today, I'm writing to you from the position of having 162 days. Until I hand in my thesis, and 27 days. Until I leave this city forever. Take a minute to let that sink in. What's more important - career progression or location? Who is going to be the main bread-winner?

Not Just Another PhD: The Literature Review - Part One
http://notjustanotherphd.blogspot.com/2012/05/literature-review-part-one.html
Not Just Another PhD. Monday, 21 May 2012. The Literature Review - Part One. As with many universities, at my School, your first year as a PhD student is sort of like probation. You get a chance to learn the ropes (or to try, anyway), to start figuring out what your question is and to generally feel overwhelmed by what you've signed up for. However, as probation starts to draw to a close, you remember that little paragraph somewhere in the postgraduate student handbook you read months. Right now, though,...
