Mediocris (2013-2015) — Jer Nelsen
http://jernelsen.com/mediocris
Stems from my curiosity of collective memory. Using pop culture and the archive as source material, I have distilled down films to a single frame by averaging out every frame of each movie. The resulting abstractions are both reminiscent and foreign, descriptive and vague, simultaneously containing every state of existence the film holds and behaving as a still frame waiting for closer inspection. January 11, 2015. What 2014 gave me. It’s been radio silence here on the blog for a while, I know. It’s a strange season around here right now–and I don’t just mean that it’s winter, with all the strangeness that brings (seriously, negative wind chills one day and 40 degrees the next? Get out of here, winter. I’m over it.). No, it’s a strange season for many other reasons, and all those reasons have been overwhelming lately, so overwhelming that I can hardly. About them, let alone. Be my children could b...

October 16, 2014. Apparently today is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Day. As if that is a day worth celebrating. I know, the point isn’t to celebrate. It’s not like we’re talking about Mother’s Day here, or Father’s Day, or Grandparents’ Day, or any of the other greeting card holidays which exist to celebrate. It turns out, you can’t celebrate those holidays if you. Don’t have a family. So it’s not like we’re celebrating. Baby, and pictures of happy families and adorable children are flooding my news...

July 8, 2016. Whose job is it to teach students (kids) how to react responsibly in high-stress situations? To teach them the basic principles of human etiquette and morality? To teach them that disagreements do not equal devaluation of human life? So what do you do when the good guys fail you? Which way is true north? We HAVE to do better. We have to teach our kids better. We have to fight hatred with love and ignorance with enlightenment. But the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. I...

Empty Lots (2014-15) — Jer Nelsen
http://jernelsen.com/empty-lots
Is a defined generalization of suburban and post-suburban consumer culture. The photographs question the use of space and in a small way seek to somehow elevate the reticent banality of the parking space by using the inherent quality of a photograph to suggest a soupçon of a narrative. if not, he is still God (or how I feel about prayer) | ob.ser.va.tion

March 13, 2015. If not, he is still God (or how I feel about prayer). It was four years ago that the calls started. Just give us a baby. Because people get pregnant ALL THE TIME ON ACCIDENT. How hard could it be? And then I took a pregnancy test. And it was positive. That statement, it doesn’t always feel good to say it. The time we’ve spent in Kansas City has been the most challenging season of my life, and I’m not naive enough to believe that the hard part is over, now that we ...He is still God.
