Chatter from the Manor: Planting ahead
http://blog.abutlersmanor.com/2014/10/planting-ahead.html
Wednesday, October 15, 2014. PeeGee Hydrangea in full Fall glory! It's been so lovely to feel Fall come in, to take my early morning walk at o'dark thirty increasingly when it IS still dark and need a jacket and even - yikes! Gloves. And then there's today, when at 6:00 AM a light cloud cover increased the temperature 20 degrees over the previous day: 65 vs. 46. No jacket on my walk. And for the next couple of days, maybe my last chance to wear flip flops. Perfect weather for starting a new garden. Speak...

Monday, June 30, 2014. Recipe: Hawaiian French Toast. Necessity, they say, is the mother of invention. For ten years (! Flipping through my binder of recipes, I came across Kim Wynn's recipe for her pineapple french toast, and something clicked. Pineapple.coconut. rum.marachino cherries on little umbrellas.piña colada! And coconut milk. Yummy, lactose-free coconut milk. Used purposefully for the taste as well as to accommodate the lactose intolerance. 1 135 oz can light or regular coconut milk. Remove pa...

Chatter from the Manor: October 2014
http://blog.abutlersmanor.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 30, 2014. Until the street lights come on. Back in what seems like the proverbial olden days now, we were allowed to play outside after dinner until the street lights came on, which signalled the day's end and time to come inside. This weekend marks the end of Daylight Savings Time,. Which means those street lights are going to come on an hour earlier. It's nearing time for A Butler's Manor to have its bath, get into jammies, and go to bed. Will be held about 5:00 PM at Agawam Park, com...

Saturday, May 10, 2014. Getting Ready for Our Close Up! It's May, Mother's Day weekend as I write this, and all the villages in the Hamptons are getting ready for their close up, to paraphrase the immortal words of Norma Desmond in Sunset Strip. Nature, in the form of blooming trees, shrubs, and bulbs, and humankind, in the form of home remodels and spring spruce ups, are putting their prettiest faces on to turn towards the arriving sun and sun-worshippers due to arrive in a couple of weeks. Real Estate,...

Chatter from the Manor: Building that summer home in the Hamptons?
http://blog.abutlersmanor.com/2015/04/building-that-summer-home-in-hamptons.html
Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Building that summer home in the Hamptons? A recently-built "cottage" overlooking Halsey Neck Pond,. Viewed from the pavillion at Cooper's Beach. Older Shingle-style "cottage," more traditional to Southampton area,. Somehow I don't think the estate owners who ordered the hedging to be planted considered that for year round privacy, they'd be better served with the evergreen variety. The common name of which, I was amused to find out, is California privet.). There was quite a rash...
