React Demystified

http://blog.reverberate.org/2014/02/react-demystified.html

February 22, 2014. This entry will be a bit of a departure from the usual content of this blog, which is mostly about parsing and low-level programming. Lately I’ve had some interest in JavaScript frameworks, including Facebook’s React. Some recent articles I have read, particularly The Future of JavaScript MVC Frameworks. This article is an attempt to explain the core ideas in a way that makes sense to me. In a traditional web app, you interact extensively with the DOM, usually using jQuery:. Mean that,...

The Speed of Python, Ruby, and Lua's Parsers

http://blog.reverberate.org/2014/10/the-speed-of-python-ruby-and-luas.html

The Speed of Python, Ruby, and Lua's Parsers. October 29, 2014. I’ve run into some cases lately where loading a lot of generated code in Python takes a lot of time. When I profiled my test case the hotspot seemed to be the parser itself that is, Python’s parser that parses. I realized that I had no idea how fast the parsers for some of these languages are. As someone who is interested in parsers, this piqued my interest. I was particularly interested to see how much precompiling would help.

The overhead of abstraction in C/C++ vs. Python/Ruby

http://blog.reverberate.org/2014/10/the-overhead-of-abstraction-in-cc-vs.html

The overhead of abstraction in C/C vs. Python/Ruby. October 17, 2014. I’ve been working on some Python and Ruby libraries lately that wrap C extensions. An interesting and important observation came to me as I was doing some of the design. Please note this is. The observation I made is that C and C compilers can inline, whereas interpreters for Python and Ruby generally do not. To illustrate, take this Python program:. Compare this with the equivalent first program in C (I used volatile to prevent the co...

On "The Future of JavaScript MVC Frameworks"

http://blog.reverberate.org/2014/02/on-future-of-javascript-mvc-frameworks.html

On "The Future of JavaScript MVC Frameworks". February 22, 2014. This entry is a sort of part 2 to my previous entry React Demystified. Now that I understand React better, I want to take a closer look at the blog post that motivated this quest to begin with, The Future of JavaScript MVC Frameworks. That entry advocates a vision for what MVC’s of the future will look like in JavaScript, and is accompanied by some strong benchmark numbers. React/Om vs. Backbone.js benchmarks. The article starts by noting t...

Floating Point Demystified, Part 1

http://blog.reverberate.org/2014/09/what-every-computer-programmer-should.html

Floating Point Demystified, Part 1. September 15, 2014. This article used to be called What Every Computer Programmer Should Know About Floating Point, part 1 . Some people noted that this was perhaps too similar to the name of the existing article What Every Computer Scientist Should Know About Floating Point . Since I have a bunch of other articles called X Demystified , I thought I’d rename this one to remove confusion. That are implemented on current CPUs and that most programmers will come into cont...

Inside Content-Defined chunking in Pcompress | The Pseudo Random Bit Bucket

https://moinakg.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/inside-content-defined-chunking-in-pcompress

The Pseudo Random Bit Bucket. My Earlier Blog archive. Inside Content-Defined chunking in Pcompress. After having played with the content-defined (or content-aware) chunking process in Pcompress and having tweaked it’s parameters quite a bit I decided to actually look at what kind of chunk (or block in Pcompress terms) sizes it is producing. I had never looked at this aspect in the past and was curious to see whether there exists any abnormal skewness. Total size: 360 GB. XML and HTML (The enwik9. Linux ...

Of Clones, Twins and Embryos. Friday, April 3, 2009. The Morality of Human Cloning. It is not always clear about what is meant by the term ‘cloning’. In fact, we can mean different things by ‘cloning’:. 1) cloning per se, or the production of individuals identical with an original through asexual reproduction, which is common in the plant kingdom and which in principle produces individuals with the same genetic endowment, but not necessarily, since some genetic mutation can occur during the process.
