Nature of Tasmania: November 2009

http://tasnature.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, 29 November 2009. Welcome Swallow Feeding it's Young. Or Swallow Nearly Swallows Swallow. Yesterday I watched a group of for juvenile swallows perched on a broken branch in the river and waiting to be fed. I tried capturing this on video but the lighting was so harsh that the video camera could not deal with it at all. With the SLR, two stops of exposure compensation at least allowed me to get a few reasonable shots. Click Photos to Enlarge). Patiently awaiting the next instalment. Places - Naraw...

Nature of Tasmania: May 2015

http://tasnature.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, 21 May 2015. Fungi, Lichens, and Liverworts. I've spent a little time this month perambulating up and down the river bank at Fern Glade. With the cooler weather setting in, and plenty of rain, a variety of fungi has been popping up out of the ground, on rotting logs, and even on an animal carcass. Be aware that I am not an expert on fungi (or on anything else for that matter) so all identifications are tentative. Ghoul fungus , Hebeloma aminophilum. Honey Fungus, Armillaria luteobubalina. This ...

The blog for waders, wildfowl, terns, seals, and more. July 18, 2016. Daisies and Clovers – Noémi Menczelesz. I also had chance to help around our dipping pond. This pond had been restored for children’s activities. I watched the beginning of the work from inside, but I helped at the end of it: we needed to move the soil near the pond. Thistles – Noémi Menczelesz. Common terns and their chicks – Ron Mitchell. The famous spoonbill – Ron Mitchell. July 12, 2016. We are only able to safely take groups out o...

Gavin Macfie's 57 Degrees North: February 2010

http://gavinmacfie.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Gavin Macfie's 57 Degrees North. The connections between landscape and identity are explored in this outdoor and travel writing blog from the Highlands of Scotland. Monday, 22 February 2010. A Winter Bivvy on Sgurr a'Mhaoriach. I passed two very pleasant hours approaching the summit by moonlight, arriving just before 2000, and used my snow shovel to excavated a little hollow, as a hare would. There wasn't a single light visible anywhere, the only trace of human activity was a very faint hint of light pol...

Nature of Tasmania: September 2008

http://tasnature.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 30 September 2008. Whilst in hot pursuit of a small but agile skink, I was removing a few rocks among which it had crawled. My attention was then shifted to the interesting looking beetle you see photographed below. It is 15mm in length and I believe it to be Saragus costatus. Just a couple of days ago. Another coincidence is that I last saw this species almost a year ago to the day and only a few feet from where this one was located. It can be viewed here. Click Photos to Enlarge). Hanging from...

Nature of Tasmania: March 2009

http://tasnature.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 3 March 2009. Australian Fur Seals at Bull Rock. As Mark Twain may have said, "The reports of my blog's death are greatly exaggerated". So what has been happening here in Tassie? Well back in December I spent a couple of days at Stanley here in the North-West. While there I took the seal cruise out to Bull Rock. Click on Photos to Enlarge). 1 - The town of Stanley and "The Nut" as seen from off shore. And the occasional New Zealand Fur Seal ( Arctocephalus forsteri. 4 - Australian Fur Seals.

Nature of Tasmania: April 2010

http://tasnature.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 28 April 2010. A Wet but Pleasant Day at Narawntapu. Earlier this month we went with friends to Narawntapu National Park having virtually guaranteed they would get a good view of a wombat. Upon arrival it was dull, overcast and the place seemed to be devoid of life bar a couple of ravens flying overhead. Fungus along the track to the hide. A rather wet Wombat - Vombatus ursinus. Wombat close up - Vombatus ursinus. Bennet's Wallaby - Macropus rufogriseus. So despite the rain it wasn't a bad day...

Nature of Tasmania: June Birding Highlights

http://tasnature.blogspot.com/2015/06/june-birding-highlights.html

Saturday, 27 June 2015. Or… Some bad photos of uncommon birds. Some of the following birds may be common in some parts of the country but in my local area I would consider them all to be uncommon to rare. 1 Fairy Tern ( Sternula nereis. On 9th May I sighted nine Fairy Terns at Cooee. It was high tide and they were feeding right at the edge of the shore just metres from my car. Of course my camera was at home. The following day I returned, armed with a canon – camera that is :-). Fairy Tern in Background.

Static Blog with Pelican and CloudFiles Static Web. I've wanted to post up how I make this blog work for a while now. It seemed like a daunting task, but after I started another one. For my ham radio stuff, I realized it wasn't that hard. First step is to get Pelican. Pelican is a python project and you need at least Python 2.7. I use python virtualenvs for things like this. If you don't have virtualenv installed you can check out the docs here. Or simpler with virtualenvwrapper. Coding: utf-8 -*- #.
