2014 Year-In-Review | semantic art
https://blog.semanticart.com/blog/2014/12/31/2014-year-in-review
Code should say something. 2014 was a great but complicated year. Here’s a completely unnecessary and self-indulgent look back at some of it. This year I moved away from doing full-time Rails to working on single-page Backbone apps with Java APIs. I still reach for Ruby as my scripting language, but I’m solving different problems these days. I still feel sluggish in Java and am working to pick up some best-practices. I’ve also been enjoying playing with Elixir. Thanks to last.fm. Is worth a listen. And T...

Code should say something. Quick and Dirty OCR for Letterpress and Other Tile-based Games. I’ve been playing enough Letterpress. Lately to realize that I’m not great at it. There are plenty of cheating programs for Letterpress (just google or search in the app store). Take screenshot of game and import it into solver. Parse the board into a string of letters.

Code should say something. Executable Note-Taking Writing Automated Tests as a Learning Method. Im trying a new (to me) approach to learning programming languages: writing automated tests as a learning method. This surely isnt a new idea but I wanted to share my experience. The concept is pretty straightforward:. Discover how something works. Write a test to illustrate your understanding (aim for concise examples). Add more tests as-needed to probe the boundaries of your understanding. You should try it.
