Homemade shoes: A new design. So, I made shoes once before that were pretty successful: http:/ www.blog.smalladventures.net/2014/10/homemade-shoes.html. I liked these a lot, but they had a few flaws as noted in that article. There are 2 major issues. Heal stretch caused my heal to start landing on the heal-seam. This limited distances I could walk in these to 10 miles, and if I did that I couldn't do it again the next day. See those stitches in the image above? That's where I messed up. The stitching...

smalladventures: January 2014

http://www.blog.smalladventures.net/2014_01_01_archive.html

Fire is an amazing tool. In my opinion it's what separated us from other Animals. As a bushcraft enthusiast and survivalist I feel like I understand fire and the risks of fire. I feel like I know how to use it safely. Well, so did this person:. I've never had a problem, and I'm going to keep using fire. I'll probably even keep thinking I know better than other people and won't screw up. but I intend to make very sure that I'm right. Links to this post. Review: Enlightened Equipment down quilt. Well, it t...

smalladventures: December 2013

Well, at the primitive skills gatherings and elsewhere I noticed some time ago many people simply put a large PVC pipe on their roof, and store things in there, so I'm giving it a try. The pipe is tied to the roof with 2 small hose-clamps running around the roof-rack bars, and 2 large ones running around the pipe. The large clamps interlace with the small clamps. This does let the pipe rock a little, but it seems pretty secure, we'll see! Links to this post. So, assuming it lasts I'd call this a success&...

I've been wanting to make shoes for a long time. I've made gillies, but while they were cool, I never got one that was really useful as a generalized standalone shoe. I've tried a couple moccasin designs, but never quite got it to work out. Here's my attempt at a shoe using this idea:. I started by tracing my feet, and adding a seam allowance. The top of the shoe I literally just pulled the material over my foot and traced around the outer edge. For the pattern we used some left-over shipping foa...I sim...

Recently Jess and I met a friend of a friend. We were talking about long distance backpacking and primitive skills and that sort of thing. At some point the conversation turned towards animals, using them, eating them, etc. Partly as a meat-eater she was very interested in trying actually slaughtering and butchering an animal with us. After not long they were hopping around pretty chill. We don't particularly believe in avoiding feeding animals before slaughter, it might make our jobs a tiny tiny bit...

Bantu / Baka Pigmy springpole foot-plate trap. I can't call this experimental archaeology, because the Bantu Pigmi and Baka people are using this trap today, as I write this post. So, I'm going with experimental anthropology ;-). So, there's a springpole (as in the first picture) with a piece of cordage running down to the trap itself. Here's a closup of the trip mechanism. In a real trap we would then cover this with some leaves and sticks disguise it up most of the way. Then as the next to last ste...

About Us

http://www.smalladventures.net/about_us.html

Primitive and modern outdoor skills. I first created this website simply to share and give back a little to the community that has fed my interests for so long. My goal now is to keep learning and to pass it on. I want to help dispell fears of the outdoors via education and careful yet broad strides towards living with, not just in, our environment. Wild Rambles: First Post

http://wild-rambles.blogspot.com/2015/01/first-post.html

My adventures in the woods of Virginia. Wednesday, January 14, 2015. I used to post over at blog.smalladventures.net. But have finally struck out on my own. This blog will be a record of the crazy things I do in the hopes that they'll be useful or at least interesting to you. Since I'm currently training a Search and Rescue dog and taking an EMT class that will probably be a fair number of the posts, but hopefully I'll get some good backpacking trips and bush craft adventures in too.

My adventures in the woods of Virginia. Wednesday, January 14, 2015. Types of Search and Rescue Dogs. First let me say that I'm not an expert in this subject, but here are the general categories of dogs I've seen. This is everyone's image of showing the dog an old piece of clothing and it takes off following exactly where the subject went. These dogs are said to scent discriminate, meaning that they differentiate between different people's scents and only follow the subject's scent (you hope! Human Remai...

Mandag 22. oktober 2012.
