Ponderings on live music. penned by an enthusiastic philistine. Wednesday, 4 June 2008. The Shout Out Louds @ Madame Jojo's, June 3 2008. The first time I heard the Shout Out Louds. I assumed it was The Cure. It was on in the background. I assumed I was listening to The Cure’s In Between Days. So did the DJ, who announced in the outro. "that was The Cure with, sorry, that was The Shout Out Louds with Tonight I Have to Leave it. What they look like. What they sound like. Pics: whiteheatmayfair on flickr.

Ponderings on live music. penned by an enthusiastic philistine. Monday, 8 December 2008. Taraf de Haïdouks @ Union Chapel, December 7 2008. Last summer, I was lucky enough to cover the annual Romani pilgrimage to St Maries de la Mer. A superb brass troupe from northeastern Romania, subjects of the award-winning film Brass on Fire. You may have also seen them on the cover of Garth Cartwright’s book Princes Amongst Men. And heard their version of Born to be Wild. On the ending credits of the Borat film.

Ponderings on live music. penned by an enthusiastic philistine. Tuesday, 18 November 2008. Yo Majesty @ Barfly, November 17 2008. Ah, the wonderful Camden Barfly. As, erm, regular readers might have deduced, this is not my favourite venue. What they look like. What they sound like. Be-jesus. There is quite a lot going on here. Shunda K is a rapid rapper, cramming a barrage of lyrics into extremely tight lines- the effect is more rhythmic than lyrical. Imagine the vocal flexibility of Busta Rh...The music...

Ponderings on live music. penned by an enthusiastic philistine. Wednesday, 15 October 2008. Friendly Fires @ Kings College, October 7 2008. It’s freshers’ season, and oodles of fresh loan money is burning holes in the frivolous pockets of thousands of students across the country. In other news, the music industry is fucked, and (as indicated by the recent trend of album tours. Lots of good gigs in student unions in October. I’d heard the Friendly Fires. On the radio- Jump in the Pool. What they look like.

Are soon headed for Scandinavian climbs. On their holiday, they plan to 1. Pick up a few DJ sets, and 2. Chirps some Scandifemales (see: 1). Last night, WhoMadeWho. Is one of the Shoreditch darlings. Ponderings on live music. penned by an enthusiastic philistine. Friday, 28 March 2008. The Argonauts @ Gramophone, March 13 2008. I was in Liverpool writing a piece for an exciting publication (ooh! Loosely based on the music scene there. Thus I found myself in 3345. The private(ish) members club attached to the Parr St Studios. Managed by the lovely Thom Lang. Every Thursday they run an acoustic night there, and The Argonauts. This was my first time at The Gramophone. On the same road. But the downs...

Ponderings on live music. penned by an enthusiastic philistine. Thursday, 26 June 2008. Radiohead @ Victoria Park, June 25, 2008. Why did I go and see Radiohead? Why does a dog lick its bollocks? No explanation needed, really. But perhaps an interesting tale about how. Nope, when I picked both of mine up, it was because they had been bought in bulk, rightly predicting a swift sell-out. In hindsight, this wasn't a particularly interesting tale. Posterity, eh? Event, where the Women's Institute hosted a sw...

I stated that Jon Hillcock. 8217;s Saturday night show was the only thing worth listening to on the increasingly rubbish XFM. In fact, John Kennedy’s Exposure. Monday-Thursday), where I first heard Those Dancing Days. The Shout Out Louds. What they look like. What they sound like. And even Kate Pierson from the B-52s.

Benji's Bands: DeVotchKa @ The Scala, April 9 2008

Ponderings on live music. penned by an enthusiastic philistine. Thursday, 10 April 2008. DeVotchKa @ The Scala, April 9 2008. A few weeks ago, upon returning from a work trip to Japan, I found myself up at silly o’clock in the morning listening to the radio. As has been my radio obsession for some time now, my station of choice was the totally brilliant 6music. The through-the-night DJ is Chris Hawkins. And he slipped on a DeVotchKa. Track The gypsy(ish) sound was a more refined version of Gogol Bordello.
