We got a bushel of potatoes, two and a half bushels of tomatoes and a bushel of cantaloupe, cucumbers and squash. Wanda delivered a bushel of tomatoes and some cucumbers to Martinsville on Thursday and I took the potatoes, a bushel and half of tomatoes and the bushel of cantaloupes and squash to Stepping Stone Mission, this Friday.

Blue Ridge Community Garden. March 18, 2015. Another gardener who lives near New Vision’s Giving Garden owns a plow and a disc. About a week ago, the gardener, who’s named Jerry, visited out garden and offered to bring his equipment up and double the size of our garden. Today, Jerry came up and plowed. Jerry will let the soil dry a bit before he discs it. Meanwhile, I continue germinating seed. I suppose this is a case of “count your blessings and figure out how to deal with them”. We’ll need help;.

Blue Ridge Community Garden. May 13, 2015. I think this is amaranth, a common C4 weed locally known as “pig weed”. If so, we have a whole passle of it growing in the new section of our Giving Garden, which I spent almost three hours hoeing this morning. I just came out of the Agricultural Extension Office where I showed Cynthia Martel, the weed expert, the plant’s photo and she confirmed it as amaranthus, an invasive weed of cattle pastures. Blue Ridge Community Garden. November 26, 2014. As we prepare for Thanksgiving, we should all feel a sense of gratitude and satisfaction with our gardening efforts this past growing season. We all did a lot of hard work and, maybe, some good. Tomorrow, as we gather around our tables, we should give a special thanks for the tireless souls at the soup kitchen, food bank, food pantry and community centers who donate their time, energy and resources to help those who need help. We still have much to do.
