Germane Eclecticism: December 2006
http://germaneeclecticism.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html
Trying to fit round squares into peg holes since 1971! Saturday, December 30, 2006. This is the creek where I was Baptized many years ago in rural Kentucky. It's not likely to be germane to you, but I just love how the picture turned out. I was on a country drive last Wednesday morning around 7:30am when I couldn't resist taking a quick snapshot. Me, Spring 1989. Me, December 26, 2006. A few more gray hairs, a few more pounds, but still that cutting edge fashion sense! Links to this post. In a recent con...

Trying to fit round squares into peg holes since 1971! Wednesday, May 31, 2006. You did it again, Mayor Bloomberg. Posted by Michael Vernon at Wednesday, May 31, 2006. Links to this post. Wednesday, May 10, 2006. Last Night in Midtown Manhattan. I was walking around midtown. For the first time ever since I have lived in New York City, someone handed me a camera and asked me to take a photo. With a friendly, "of course! Please forgive the dangling participle.) The guy replied, "Brooklyn.".

Germane Eclecticism: October 2006

Trying to fit round squares into peg holes since 1971! Monday, October 30, 2006. A perfect day at Cousin Bobby's house would begin with pitching horseshoes and drinking beer under a bright, sunny sky with just the slightest breeze to keep us from getting too hot. As dusk descended onto that lonely Kentucky road, out would come the guitars. Any given night the sounds of country, gospel, southern rock and bluegrass would drift down into the hollars, keeping cadence with crickets and bullfrogs. I am telling...

Germane Eclecticism: November 2006

Trying to fit round squares into peg holes since 1971! Thursday, November 09, 2006. Porky's 43; Gym Bar 40. It was right down the wire, sports fans. The game was close through both halves. Gym Bar and Porky's took turns leading the score. But, the final count is the final count. There is no glory in 2nd place. Just ask the losers of the World Series this year. Posted by Michael Vernon at Thursday, November 09, 2006. Links to this post. Tuesday, November 07, 2006. 19 Months, 3 Weeks and 4 Days. The conver...

Germane Eclecticism: July 2006

Trying to fit round squares into peg holes since 1971! Thursday, July 06, 2006. I am not the first one to write about this book- and all the writing has been positive and well deserved. The book is now over 2 years old, but I only lately got around to reading it. As a fan of the mystery/thriller novel, I have come to expect the expected. Not many writers are able to add a new angle or a new twist to a genre that is so old and so crowded. Harrison does it, though, and then some, in Havana Room.

Trying to fit round squares into peg holes since 1971! Saturday, March 25, 2006. You Have a Good One! What has happened with contemporary language in these United States? For some time, I have been compiling a list of words or phrases that have the same effect on me as a fingernail scraping a chalkboard. And now, through the magic of the internets, you get to share in my frustration! 1 "You have a good one." A good what? I thought this one had gone away, but I heard it just yesterday. Germane Eclecticism: January 2007

Trying to fit round squares into peg holes since 1971! Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Admit it: you have done it. The proliferation of "air quotes" is distressing and sad. About the only medium it has not infested is radio. Admit it. You have used "air quotes." I have seen very intelligent people use air quotes. Heck, I have even seen the holder of a PhD in English use them! Unless you are Italian, surely you can communicate without resorting to hand signals. We can only hope that the trend reverses. We we...

Germane Eclecticism: September 2006

Trying to fit round squares into peg holes since 1971! Saturday, September 16, 2006. Who is this cutie? While balancing the checkbook, I went to my bank's website to see if its figures match mine. I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw a handsome young man stuck right there on its home page. If he weren't just stuck there on the screen, I would jump him. I expect lots more online banking in my future. Posted by Michael Vernon at Saturday, September 16, 2006. Links to this post. We spent 5 years. Posted...
