Dancing on Glass: March & April Reading (+ the Clarke, the Baileys and Eduardo Galeano)
http://dancingonglass11.blogspot.com/2015/05/march-april-reading-clarke-baileys-and.html
Tuesday, 5 May 2015. March and April Reading ( the Clarke, the Baileys and Eduardo Galeano). There was lots of online coverage about the death of Günter Grass but much less about Eduardo Galeano. This is a great shame. Not only was he a great novelist but also a brilliant, outspoken critic against the wild excesses of capitalism and Western Imperialism. I urge everyone to read him. My first William Gibson EVER, hugely enjoyable. And thoughts from John Self here. An Artist of the Floating World. The Arthu...

Dancing on Glass: March 2014
http://dancingonglass11.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Friday, 28 March 2014. Cuckoo Song - Frances Hardinge. I've bought a Kindle and against all the odds I'm loving it. Easy to use, easy to sit with the Kindle in one hand and write notes with the other wherever I'm sat. I've also signed up with NetGalley to help with the day job and so I can blog more. The first advance copy I've read is Frances Hardinge's new novel Cuckoo Song. Pan MacMillan), out on 8th May. I’d read three of Frances Hardinge’s novels up till now – Fly By Night. And A Face Like Glass.

Dancing on Glass: The Wolf Border - Sarah Hall
http://dancingonglass11.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-wolf-border-sarh-hall.html
Thursday, 16 April 2015. The Wolf Border - Sarah Hall. I don’t get the chance to discuss books with others often but The Wolf Border. Her return to England allows the reader to meet her dying mother Binny, access Rachel’s hard, forensic gaze whilst glimpsing her protective shell and a partial hollowness inside; the self destructive tendencies too – that dangerous, uncertain border between protecting yourself and shutting yourself down too keenly. I found the first half more satisfying than the second hal...

Dancing on Glass: A Clarke 2015 shortlist and a few thoughts on Bête.
http://dancingonglass11.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-clarke-2015-shortlist-and-few.html
Thursday, 19 March 2015. A Clarke 2015 shortlist and a few thoughts on Bête. The Clarke Award 2015. Some rich, vital novels are definitely going to miss out on any shortlist action this year. I’m still working my way through all the contenders but, aware that the shortlist may be out anytime soon, mine would be:. B ête – Adam Roberts. A Man Lies Dreaming – Lavie Tidhar. The Race - Nina Allan. Station Eleven – Emily Mandel. Europe in Autumn – Dave Hutchinson. The Girl in the Road – Monica Byrne. What subt...

Dancing on Glass: June 2014
http://dancingonglass11.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 3 June 2014. Most Hollywood comedies are crap so when Henry Barnes gave Bad Neighbours. 4 stars in the Guardian I went along. [sighs] I watched it all the way through and laughed a couple of times near the end when the two main characters have a fight - funny like The Three Stooges. But for the most part its fairly dull and embarrassing. Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron just about keep you watching At least its not as offensive as many of them - Ted. On the other hand Blue Ruin. Jab We Met (...

Dancing on Glass: February 2015
http://dancingonglass11.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Friday, 27 February 2015. Harvest - Jim Crace. Was shortlisted for the Man Booker and won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 2013. I ended up enjoying it a great deal (as I did with so much of that year’s literary fiction). I’ve now read nearly all the books on that year’s shortlists – there were some cracking novels:. Kate Atkinson: Life After Life. AM Homes: May We Be Forgiven. Barbara Kingsolver: Flight Behaviour. Hilary Mantel: Bring Up the Bodies. Maria Semple: Where’d You Go, Bernadette. I incl...
