Liverpool Greens Select Mayor Candidate. Liverpool Green Party have selected Councillor Tom Crone to be the Party's candidate in next year's mayoral election. Cllr Crone was elected councillor for St Michael’s Ward in 2014 and succeeded Cllr John Coyne as the leader of the Green Party councillors in Liverpool city council. The Green Party's bid to take a first Euro-seat seat outside the South East, and keep BNP leader Nick Griffin out of the Parliament fell agonisingly close. In the North West as a whole the Green Vote was well up 2004, and in each of the region's two biggest cities - Manchester and Liverpool - the Party polled more than the Tories (in Manchester the Party polled over 13% to take 3rd place). General Election 2010 candidates and campaign. The Green Party fielded 24 candidates in the North West region in the general election. This is a three times the number of candidates fielded in the last election in 2004, highlighting the growing strength of the Party across the region. Whilst the Party nationally celebrated its first MP in the victory of Caroline Lucas in Brighton, here the Party was squeezed by tactical voting, in what was seen as the closest election for many years.

The Green Party fielded 277 candidates in local elections across the region this May. This is over 50% of the available seats, which is the highest ever percentage coverage in the North West. The Green Party put up more candidates than the Liberal Democrats across Merseyside and Cumbria, and more than UKIP across Greater Manchester and Cumbria. The Party was particularly targeting to win 5 seats, 2 in Liverpool, one in Wirral and 2 in Lancaster. All five resulted in Green Party victories. See here.
