Promoting Sustainable Bee Welfare. Thursday, January 20, 2011. Column About Bees in the Bristol Evening Post. Here is an extract from the column I wrote in the Bristol Evening Post about bees. The headline was "We all lived with Bees in our Backyards". Wildscreen, an environmental charity, hosted a debate recently. One of the panellists commented that everything we need, want and have comes from nature. If one crucial part is missing then human kind is in serious trouble. There are things anyone can do t...

June saw the first meeting of the new bee group in Bristol, Bristol Sustainable Bee Group ( BSBG. The aim of the group is to support the bee population of honey, solitary and bumble bees. It is about the bees, not the honey. As well keeping honey bees, many members encourage solitary and bumble bees by placing suitable houses in their gardens. As a group BSBG. Bentham Bees: February 2010

http://benthambees.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

The development of a new apiary on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Sunday, 28 February 2010. After much thought and research, I decided to spend extra time on the top bars in an attempt to discourage the bees from building each comb on more than one bar. This is necessary to allow the bars to be raised for inspecting. View of the Underside of a Top Bar. The groove along the centre of the bar will be filled with bee wax. The bees should. Re the cast swarm that was slow to start expanding and the cause of some concern. Some feeding with 1:1 syrup during late July and early August encouraged comb building. Bentham Bees: December 2010

http://benthambees.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

The development of a new apiary on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Thursday, 23 December 2010. Winter - Trying my patience! The bees seem to cope with the cold better than I do! We've had about a month of below zero (C) temperatures now, which is unusual for England! Snow has caused disruption to rail and road travel, but I've still been able to get to work (an hour by road) :-(. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Bee Books I've Enjoyed. Bentham Bees: May 2010

http://benthambees.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

The development of a new apiary on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Sunday, 23 May 2010. At last the hive and bait hive are positioned and waiting for bees. Both are baited with lemon-grass oil and a pheromone phial. I fear I am now a hive building addict; I've decided to build another hive in case I am lucky enough to get a swarm in the bait hive AND in the main hive. I always was an optimist! There was a little bit of interest shown in the bait hive yesterday, so who knows! Links to this post. Content ...

Bentham Bees: May 2011

http://benthambees.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

The development of a new apiary on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Friday, 13 May 2011. The colony has been building up very well and I've struggled to keep up with them! On Friday afternoon, I took advantage of a break in the weather to go through the hive. There were still plenty of bees, brood and stores. As the hive was still so full I was concerned about cast swarms, especially as there were around a dozen capped queen cells visible! The Three Foot Hive. I'm using a selection of top-bar designs in ...

Bentham Bees: March 2010

http://benthambees.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

The development of a new apiary on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Sunday, 14 March 2010. The next step is to double my chances of catching a swarm, with a bait hive. It's built to the same design and dimensions as the main hive (Phil Chandler's design), but half the length, that's 18 inch sides instead of the 36 inch of the main hive. The roof is a single slope on this one, too. This will have no legs, but will be placed a couple of metres above ground which is where the bees apparently (hopefully!

The development of a new apiary on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Sunday, 27 March 2011. Busy, Busy, Busy! We have had a few very nice days recently with temperatures reaching highs of about 15C.The bees have been flying frequently and returning loaded with nectar and pollen. The pollen was light yellow and orange and can be seen on the rear legs of some of the bees in the following video. I could still hear them working though. Links to this post. The development of a new apiary on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Saturday, 26 February 2011. Yesterday was the first day this year that I have been at home when the temperature has reached 10 C. There was a pause in the rain too! The bees were out and about. I assumed they were on cleansing flights, but some were bringing back some pollen! I was surprised that they seem to have been flying around and over Snow-drops (pink pollen, loads of flowers) to get to the crocuses! Links to this post. Bristol Ev...

Bonkers about Baking; adventures in my kitchen. Friday, 3 October 2014. S is for Soup. It's giving like giving your body a hug from the inside out. It's seasonal cooking at its best and is great at turning the odd parsnip, half a swede and few potatoes into a feast. I am even feeling happier just writing these first few sentences.
