Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist.
Bushranger: February 2014
http://boobook48.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Wednesday, 26 February 2014. It's an insect that resembles a mantis, but it's not a mantis and it's not a fly. The Mantis Fly is related to lacewings and antlions, a member of the Family Mantispidae in the Order Neuroptera. I can't narrow this one down to genus level but it could be Campion. Several years ago I posted a photo of a Mantis Fly on this blog, here. Mantis Flies are attracted to lights at night but rarely seen during the day. I am in awe of b...

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Monday, 21 October 2013. We walked about 200 metres along a track in the forest north of Anglesea on Victoria's south coast but it took a while because we found a few orchids flowering, about ten species in all. Am I repeating myself when I say this area is a marvellous floristic treasure? Eastern Bronze Caladenia Caladenia transitoria. Large Duck Orchid Caleana major. Sp aff. vulgaris. Spotted Sun Orchid Thelymitra ixioides. Monday, October 21, 2013.

Random thoughts from an amateur Aussie naturalist. Sunday, 22 March 2015. Fishing is a foreign place to me, but, for those who have 'the knowledge' Mallacoota is a major drawcard. Pelicans and Silver Gulls know all about fishing as well. Or, at least, they know where fishermen clean their fish. Crested Terns and Silver Gulls dodging waves at Shipwreck Creek. A crab hiding between two of the eroded layers. Sunday, March 22, 2015. Links to this post. Saturday, 21 March 2015. The wharf at Tathra is historic...

Sandy Straits and Beyond: April 2015
http://sandystraitsandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Sandy Straits and Beyond. Monday, April 27, 2015. Even under the mangroves the reflections were nearly perfect. I stayed well out from the roost where I expected to find shorebirds and then sat sill on the kayak and let myself gradually drift in closer. When I do this the birds allow a much closer approach than if I paddle in with paddles flashing in the sunlight. Of course the Pied Oystercatchers were there and reflected in the still water. Several more photos of the Little Egrets made a great finish to...

Butterflies, Moths plus other invertebrates found in my garden at Great Western, Victoria. Australia. Friday, 13 November 2009. November Mothing - 3. Butterflies, Moths plus other invertebrates found in my garden at Great Western, Victoria. Australia. Tuesday, 26 May 2009. Well, I think this moth is Oxycanus antipoda! Hepialids can be quite difficult to correctly identify without the beneift of years of experience and in some cases, a microscope! I was unable to be of much use to Denis. When he called for identification assistance recently, but I guess that is part and parcel of the mothing game! We are learning together. Click images to enlarge).

Anything and everything to do with the Barwon River. 22 November, 2014. Branching out - a river of gold. Silurian rock formation at the Leigh Grand Junction Bridge. In sections of the river like this, the underlying rock is exposed, however most of it lies deep underground, covered by the products of subsequent geological events - events which also helped shape the countryside we see today and the rich goldmining industry which flourished during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
