Tuesday, October 21, 2014. Through the eyes of a student. Asbury Park High School, NJ, where my father used to teach. I am excited about this article on Grant Wiggins’ blog entitled,. A veteran teacher turned coach shadows 2 students for 2 days – a sobering lesson learned. The first sentence is “I have made a terrible mistake.”. Gosh More educators should shadow students for a few days. Saturday, October 18, 2014. Fibonacci and Fractals Links. I had the pleasure of being the co-presenter of a workshop ca...

Handmade by Amy L. Burns. Amy's ongoing book arts journey. Friday, November 22, 2013. Double vs Single Needle Coptic. Double needle Coptic binding. Curious about the differences in both technique and results, last spring I decided to try double needle Coptic binding. Since then, I've done a few projects using the double needle Coptic and enjoy the results. Here's what I've found. With single needle binding, I've always had visual anxiety about the bindings at the head and tail of the spine - because they...

Handmade by Amy L. Burns. Amy's ongoing book arts journey. Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Sometime in the last year I acquired a raggedy vintage cookbook from 1933: "Good Cooking Made Easy and Economical" that was just begging for a new life. My plan was to rebind the cover into a recipe journal (or whatever someone wanted it to be), and use the original pages to make a apron - a full apron, with skirt and top and maybe even ruffles. Paper just doesn't lay the way fabric does - it's stiff and unmoving.

For some time I've been wrestling with whether it's best to cut or tear journal pages. I like the look and feel of torn pages - the edges are soft, nonconforming, and let you know without a doubt that human hands (rather than a machine) made this. Yet, I worry that there is a subtle rigidity expressed in these cut pages. What is your response to torn pages, to cut pages? Meanwhil...

Handmade by Amy L. Burns: Seals from label scraps
http://amylburns.blogspot.com/2014/01/seals-from-label-scraps.html
Handmade by Amy L. Burns. Amy's ongoing book arts journey. Tuesday, January 14, 2014. Seals from label scraps. Bee seals made from. My shipping labels only print on about 90 percent of the paper leaving a bit I can cut away and repurpose. So, I do. I print my tiny linocuts onto the label paper scraps and use a decorative punch to pop them out in circles, flowers, or hearts. Posted by Amy L. Burns. Labels: Things I Make. I can make all sorts of journals, as long as I don't intend to use them for myself. Once I start thinking about what I want for my own journal, it's immediate paralysis. Where is your creative "block"? Posted by Amy L. Burns. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Click image to view profile. Share this on Facebook. Sign up for occassional eNewsletters.

Handmade by Amy L. Burns. Amy's ongoing book arts journey. Tuesday, July 9, 2013. Things I've learned while trying to make gelatine plates for printmaking. Buy more than one box of gelatine. Maybe consider buying 3 or 4 boxes, just in case you spill, or realize you need your gelatine plate to be extra concentrated - watery gelatine makes a fragile plate. Did you mess it up? Gelatine can be remelted and reformed many many times. (I'm on time 3, myself.). If your plastic wrap is not wide enough to line you...
