Botany Without Borders: October 2013

http://botanywithoutborders.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Where Design Meets Science. Saturday, October 26, 2013. Time-sensitive ecology of the hairy fungus. My friend and colleague Peter Busher was out doing fieldwork near his study site at the Quabbin Reservoir in Massachusetts. He took pictures of this creepy fungus that looked like a giant hairball. It was growing on fresh bear dung. The landscape we observe, human and otherwise, is a time-sensitive space. Things happen in it on time scales that range from nanoseconds to eons. Our time is like a sna...The l...

Botany Without Borders: July 2013

http://botanywithoutborders.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Where Design Meets Science. Saturday, July 20, 2013. Keeping cool while its hot. During these hot days of July I've been keeping a close eye on the garden. Heavy rains early this summer encouraged generous growth, and I've been a bit worried as I watch the ferns fainting, the production of flowers slowing, and the drooping leaves of the potato plants. Their "performance" isn't what it's supposed to be. I've been watching our cat too. Fin is a Maine coon, hairy and luxuriant. He's happiest in a bl...Thurs...

Botany Without Borders: June 2013

http://botanywithoutborders.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Where Design Meets Science. Tuesday, June 25, 2013. The Sad Strange Waste of AC. Here in Boston we experience a handful of days each year with high heat and humidity. Yesterday was one of them. I guess you could call it uncomfortable. But really, most of the year here is bone cold. As if by reflex the air conditioners have roared into action. I know I sound like a throwback. People will complain that AC is a lifesaver, allowing them to sleep, preventing allergies, enabling work and play. But real...It's ...

Botany Without Borders: March 2012

http://botanywithoutborders.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Where Design Meets Science. Monday, March 26, 2012. This Bud's For You. So the big question is, how far did our Boston plants break dormancy last week? We had an extended spate of very warm days,. Bright sunshine, and all the ingredients necessary to bring out the flowers, and to an extent, the leaves. Our magnolia, our forsythias, and all the cherry trees in the neighborhood were out in full bloom. Again, it depends on the species. Most of the shrubs and trees I've looked at still have their leaves ...

Botany Without Borders: Eradicating garden weeds: Not

http://botanywithoutborders.blogspot.com/2014/04/eradicating-garden-weeds-not.html

Where Design Meets Science. Saturday, April 26, 2014. Eradicating garden weeds: Not. A few weeks ago in the California desert we were treated to a wonderful show of native flowers. It looked like the flowers were emerging from "nothing." How could these beauties pop up out of mud, rocks, and sand? I realized the desert soil must be full of seeds and dormant plants, waiting for the right conditions to spring into action. "Seed banks" are an invisible part of the landscape but they're very much there.

My life as a working creative. My First Processed Space Image. ShapeOko 2 Building Adventures So Far →. August 4, 2013. For the past few months, my CNC Build Club project has been building a ShapeOko CNC mill. From a kit Jeff donated to PS:One to replace the machine hacked into a pick-and-place. The ShapeOko belongs to PS:One and will (hopefully) be a permanent part of the space. After several attempts at finding the right pen or marker, and figuring out how to tape it securely, this was the result:.

My life as a working creative. ShapeOko 2 Building Adventures So Far. September 14, 2014. Donated a ShapeOko 2 CNC Router “The Works” kit. During the first session, we assembled wheels and bearings, and attached them to plates for the x, y,and z axes. We started the next session with parts that looked like this:. Describe the z-axis assembly as the most intricate, and they’re not kidding. It took a lot of fiddly work and some mistakes to get here:. Thank you to everyone who helped so far! Graphic designe...

My life as a working creative. Newer posts →. New Work, Creative Process, and Veggies. October 10, 2011. I just finished up another project for QCDC. It was a set of collateral for the Bronzeville Harvest Fest, which is connected with the Bronzeville Community Market, which was my first brief for them. This time, they sent me an idea for a poster, and I iterated from that, and then took it further. I sent in three comps, and the “further” idea ended up being chosen. Here it is:. Continue reading →. Botany Without Borders

Where Design Meets Science. Saturday, May 3, 2014. UX in the garden. Who experiences the garden? We do, our close neighbors do, and so do the people who come past the house walking their dogs or with kids in strollers. Maybe a better question is to ask what. Experiences" the garden because there is a huge presence life on the ground and just below the surface. So what's the connection with "user experience? Sunday, April 27, 2014.
