A great butterfly to spot that day was a Viereck’s Skipper, which I’ve only rarely seen and which posed quite nicely for a photograph. Viereck’s Skipper (Atrytonopsis vierecki). And only in the last couple of weeks have we been seeing Taxiles Skippers, that to my eye closely resembles any number of other skippers from the top. Taxiles Skipper (Poanes taxiles). Over the course of four full days of butterflying, we’d see close to 50 species almost a dozen of which were new for me. From the Papilionidae family (Parnassians and Swallowtails), this week turned up a Black Swallowtail in Cienega Canyon, a butterfly that we only rarely see around here. The foothills, forested east mountains, and especially Las Huertas Canyon had both of the large yellow swallowtails we see frequently here, the Western Tiger Swallowtail,.
