Describing my adventures of the natural world. Thursday, April 14, 2011. ROYGBIV: The Spectrum of Color. Rainbow forming over Mogodore Reservoir. Fresh, vibrant sprouts. The colors of the world have been presenting themselves for the past few weeks, as mentioned, however our last time out and about was when the colors had really popped. Doug. Have been present the past few weeks; this was the first week that we had seen Barn Swallows, though! And the ever-circling Turkey Vultures. Truly magical day bro.

Discovering Northeast Ohio: May 2012

http://dougmarcum.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Recounting daily adventures and encounters with wildlife in Northeast Ohio. There is always something new to see and learn. Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Lagging - for Good Reason. Beyond these excuses, I think that I may look into getting a desktop PC and a new photo library software; something that won't be such a time-leeching hassle. If that ever happens then maybe I will have more time to write blogs and share my discoveries with all of you who are interested : ). The Spring Peepers have been calling since ...

Recounting daily adventures and encounters with wildlife in Northeast Ohio. There is always something new to see and learn. Thursday, September 19, 2013. Finally Made it to HAWK MOUNTAIN. Oh, and I finally wrote a new blog! I decided that for the sake of more frequent blog posts that short stories are ok as long as there are nice pictures to look at, right? Anyway, I am going to tell the story of the wonderful weekend that Alex and I had in eastern Pennsylvania over the weekend. Sharp-shinned Hawks are s...

http://dougmarcum.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Recounting daily adventures and encounters with wildlife in Northeast Ohio. There is always something new to see and learn. Monday, February 17, 2014. Birds, birds, birds. White-breasted Nuthatches ( Sitta carolinensis. Are amazing birds who are able to exploit a unique foraging niche in the bird world - they can move face first down trees! They must have an advantage this way in inspecting tree trunks for insect prey and other tasty morsels. EBird is single-handedly responsible for my transition. Haha b...

Discovering Northeast Ohio: Childhood Dream Fulfilled!!!

http://dougmarcum.blogspot.com/2011/09/childhood-dream-fulfilled.html

Recounting daily adventures and encounters with wildlife in Northeast Ohio. There is always something new to see and learn. Wednesday, September 14, 2011. Ahhh so I am writing this blog a couple weeks after the experience but it's probably better this way because I was way too excited to sit down at a computer! When I looked up and saw what the commotion was about, I couldn't believe my eyes. A HICKORY HORNED DEVIL! We were "Nature Nuts", a name that came from our favorite TV show when we were kids.

Discovering Northeast Ohio: What To Do During Winter...

Recounting daily adventures and encounters with wildlife in Northeast Ohio. There is always something new to see and learn. Sunday, February 12, 2012. What To Do During Winter. As much as I love the idea of keeping my blog updated, my photos updated, and generally staying in touch with the world, I find it hard to do. I am never in shortage of passion, energy, or ideas, but my focus and follow-through always needs a boost. I think there is a term to describe me (ADHD? I am working on it though : ). Repti...

Recounting daily adventures and encounters with wildlife in Northeast Ohio. There is always something new to see and learn. Sunday, April 3, 2011. Wait, March 31st is Spring I thought. Anyway, I feel like this transition from Winter to Spring has been the most drawn out tease ever. Everytime I think that we are taking a step into warmer Spring days, Winter grabs me by the ankle again and pulls me back. I think that it's time to get away for good! Brad Guarino

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a garbage man when I grew up, because garbage men were strong, drove a big truck, and did something that was useful. It was a respectable occupation, something decent, clear and practical. And it seemed very manly. For a young boy, the idea that he would someday grow up to be manly was an important source of self-assurance.
