In Defense of Dandelions | Brandon Street Gardening
https://brandongardening.wordpress.com/2014/05/09/in-defense-of-dandelions
Apples–a Living History. Tough Lessons →. In Defense of Dandelions. May 9, 2014. Gardeners everywhere are waging war on the insidious dandelion. Its deep tap root resists pulling and it will regrow if even a small bit of root remains in the ground. Mow it and its new leaves hug the ground, evading further mowing attempts. Its seeds are ubiquitous, spreading far and wide if even one plant is allowed to go to seed. Small wonder that dandelions are the bane of many gardeners’ existence. Tough Lessons →.
Peaches in Seattle? | Brandon Street Gardening

Our New Orchard Web Page. Apples–a Living History →. April 28, 2014. I love peaches, and so do most people I know. So a peach tree was high on my list of fruit tree selections. But how many peach trees do you see around Seattle? Not many, and for good reasons. So is the idea of Seattle-grown peaches sheer folly? Let’s consider all the reasons not to try this:. Peach trees are disease-prone. In particular, they are susceptible to peach leaf curl, a fungal disease promoted by cool wet winter weather, i...

Garden Produce in June. Our New Orchard Web Page. April 14, 2014. We’ve been partnering with City Fruit. For a number of years now. City Fruit funded the purchase of various trees and shrubs in the orchard; they helped in negotiations with SDOT, Department of Neighborhoods, and Seattle Parks Department; they provided free training for orchard stewards; and now they’ve put a really nice profile of the orchard up on their own web site. In Defense of Dandelions →. Apples–a Living History. May 8, 2014. Apple seeds do not grow true they are always the result of a genetic shuffle that occurs during pollination. This applies to self-fertile trees as well as those requiring cross-pollination. Plant a seed from the Honeycrisp you just ate and the apples from the resulting tree will bear little to no resemblance to their parent. Of this trait also known as extreme heterozygosity. The variability of apples has allowed them to thrive across many...

Patrick and Wendy's blog. 2015 Kite Makers Conference →. April 4, 2015. It’s been a while since our last visit to Vancouver, B.C. And since Vilde had never been to Canada, we decided to take a weekend trip up north. The weather was not very cooperative. As it turns out, Seattle is a fair bit drier than Vancouver, thanks to the rain shadow effect of the Olympic mountains (37″ annual precipitation versus 46″). With its outstanding collection of Pacific Northwest tribal artefacts. More photos …. You are com...

The “ Fort Worden Conference. 8221; was not at Fort Worden this year – instead it was held at the Warm Springs Center near Camano Island. My big project for this year was a modern rendition of Hargrave’s. Classic box kite. Wendy and I collaborated on the design for this one – I think it turned out rather well. I still had enough time left to make a small Japanese Tosa kite with a funky printed fabric. Beekeeping Nat...

Patrick and Wendy's blog. Garden Giants V →. April 11, 2015. The success rate of bud grafting is generally higher and it is the preferred technique in commercial grafting. The downside is that you need to wait until the following year to see the bud begin to grow. I was dubious about this technique, but I’m happy to note that my bud grafts from last year are leafing out. Here’s a nice example of an inverted T bud graft of plum on plum:. Patrick and Wendy's blog. October 16, 2015. Parsnips took the garden giant crown for the second year running; but this time not because of impressive height, but due to the size of the root. Patrick and Wendy's blog. Vancouver Weekend →. August 27, 2014. Thanks to the warm summer, we have had a decent crop of Tettnang hops. For the first time this year. We decided to use it to brew a wet hops IPA. This is going to be a seriously hoppy beer, using 2 pounds of fresh hops in the brew and another pound for dry hopping (i.e. adding to the secondary ferment without boiling it). Patrick and Wendy's blog. 2015 Kite Makers Conference. Bud Grafting Success →. April 6, 2015. When I graft, I am usually bark grafting. I’ve tried latex paint and commercial grafting wax, but had issues with both of these. I think I’ve finally hit on a good solution: a soft grafting wax that can be slathered on like butter. It’s easy to apply, doesn’t stick to your fingers, doesn’t wick into the graft union, and doesn’t need to be removed like tape. This entry was posted in Fruit Trees. Notify me of new ...

July 3, 2015. Monday night we had a violent thunderstorm hit our house. We sustained winds of 72 miles per hour. The storm blew down three of our trees. Mutilated several more and smashed our garage door. It took my dog kennel and threw it about thirty feet before it caught on our wall and saved us from more damage! Later that night I began to notice the lightning! I grabbed for it! I set up my gear and started shooting using my phone for a remote shutter release! I was down in a ditch. February 8, 2015.

June 4, 2014. Our garden is in a very public space and lots of people walk by daily. Whenever I am working in the garden I get curious looks and sometimes questions about what we’re doing. A permaculture orchard does not conform to the common ideas of what a park or community garden looks like so people have a hard time understanding the concepts and goals of the project. Many are hesitant to venture inside and look around. Here’s the draft version of the flyer. What do you think? June 2, 2014. In Seattl...
