Brean Down, at the far western end of the Mendip hill range -. Juts a mile and a quarter out into the Bristol Channel between Burnham-. Sea to the south and Weston-. Mare to the north. The Down is protected by the National Trust and scheduled as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its exceptional natural history. It is also classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument by the Department of the Environment for its archaeological remains which date back many thousands of years.

Brean Down Fort can be found at the end of Brean Down (shown by the left hand marker) which is just over a 1 mile walk from the car park (right hand marker) at Brean Cove (it’s worth it! Parking at Brean Down Cove is free for NT members and £3.00 per day for non NT members. The car park can be found at the end of the road through Brean. Winchester Castle Great Hall. Brean Down, Somerset. Yes- by the carpark, not in the Fort. In what is a slight change of direction for us, this review is not about a castle, but a Victorian fort. However, we felt that a military fort is close enough to the essence of a castle to warrant its inclusion, and besides we had an enjoyable visit which we wanted to share. An opening for a gun. The remains of the engine room. A passage in the lantern tunnels. Storage cupboards for ammunition. Castle in the Sand.
