유방 자가검진은 매달 정기적으로 해야 합니다. 평상시 자기 유방의 모양이나 촉감에 익숙해야 비정상적인 변화를 쉽게 찾을 수 있기 때문입니다. 검진은 생리 전에는 호르몬의 영향으로 유방이 단단해 질 수 있으므로 매월 생리가 끝난 후 2 3일째에 하는 것이 좋습니다. 이때가 유방이 가장 부드럽고 덜 부풀어 있어 만지기 쉽기 때문입니다. 폐경이 된 여성은 매월 1일 식으로 임의로 한 날을 정해 검진해야 합니다. 자가검진에서 유방에 새로이 딱딱한 멍울이 만져지면 일단 유방암을 의심해야 합니다. 유방암은 촉감이 딱딱하고 손으로 흔들어도 잘 움직이지 않습니다. 또 유두가 전과 달리 함몰되거나, 유방 표면이 돌출, 함몰되거나 유방 굴곡에 변형이 있을 때도 유방암이 의심됩니다. 자가검진에서 무슨 이상이 발견되면 즉시 전문의사에게 문의 하여야 합니다. 목욕 직후 거울 앞에 서서 양쪽 유방을 비교하면서 평소와 다른 유방 모양, 돌출 또는 함몰 부위가 있는 지 살펴봅니다. 참고: 미국암협회 유방암 검진 가이드라인 -.

5년 전, 1997년 6월, 가슴에 멍울이 만져지기에 대수롭지 않게 생각하고 병원에 갔습니다. 한참을 진찰하던 의사의 표정이 변해갔습니다. 정확한 것은 초음파검사와 유방촬영검사를 해봐야 알겠습니다. 순간 불길한 마음이 들었지만 ‘무슨 별일이야 있을라고. 확실하게 진단하기 위한 검사일거야.’ 내심 불안한 마음을 달랬습니다. 얼마나 마음이 초조했던지 간호사가 여러 번 이름을 부른 후에야 듣고 의사 앞에 앉았습니다. 한참동안 사진을 들여다보던 의사는 무겁게 입을 열었습니다. 좀더 정확한 것은 조직검사를 해봐야 하겠지만, 거의 100% 암이라고 볼 수 있습니다. 단정하듯 말하는 의사 앞에서 나는 문득 죄수에게 사형을 언도하는 재판관의 모습이 떠올랐습니다. 허겁지겁 달려와 당황하는 남편의 모습. 우리는 서로에게 아무런 말을 할 수가 없었습니다. 우리는 하얗게 밤을 지새고 서둘러 대학병원으로 갔습니다. 어쩌면 어제 진찰은 잘못일 수도 있지. 오진도 많다고 하던데. 천길 나락으로 떨어지는 순간이었습니다.
