Brent Weber: March 2009
http://brentwebersax.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Welcome to my blog! Monday, March 23, 2009. Because we entered Hong Kong from the mainland, there was an immigration process before we. Well, it was technically Kowloon, but you could consider Kowloon the peninsula half of Hong Kong. We bought MTR (Hong Kong's subway/metro) tickets at an computerized kiosk, waited about ten minutes for the next train, and we were off to find the Panda Hotel in the Tseun Wan district. Wednesday, March 11, 2009. Continuing my Chinese New Year trip, port-city Shenzhen was m...

Welcome to my blog! Saturday, November 29, 2008. 萨克斯管独奏,合奏音乐会 - Prof. Li's Saxophone Orchestra Concert. 梅松 - Feld Soprano Sonata. 韩笑 - Dubois Concerto Mvt. III. Overall, this was a very enjoyable concert as all of the saxophonists played at a very high level. I was especially impressed with the soloists, Congratulations! Saturday, November 22, 2008. Last night, Nov. 22nd, was my faculty concert at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. After months of preparation, in a flash it was over! Musically, I was als...

The Lao Wai Jazz Note: October 2008
http://joshisjazz.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
The Lao Wai Jazz Note. The Life of an Expat Jazz Musician in China 老外爵士音乐博客. Friday, October 31, 2008. Tuesday, October 28, 2008. QQ is kind of a combination of America's AOL, Myspace, and GMail. In urban China, where every city block has no less than four internet cafes, having QQ is as common as eating Bao Zi- very! Ya this randomly-generated number is a bit hard to remember, so if you think of it as a phone number it can also be: 10-ox-018-elf. Ya, I think I like that better. Saturday, October 25, 2008.
The Lao Wai Jazz Note: Chengdu's March Jazz Update
http://joshisjazz.blogspot.com/2009/03/interesting-opportunity.html
The Lao Wai Jazz Note. The Life of an Expat Jazz Musician in China 老外爵士音乐博客. Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Chengdu's March Jazz Update. Now that the New Year vacation is over and students are back in Chengdu for classes my work as a private teacher can resume. I like teaching for two reasons. 1) If for whatever reason gigs thin out, it's a great subsidy. 2) It brings new found interest and understanding, as well as future performers to Chengdu's currently meager jazz scene. March 3, 2009 at 5:39 PM. Thought yo...
The Lao Wai Jazz Note: Back from Xinjiang
http://joshisjazz.blogspot.com/2009/02/back-from-xinjiang.html
The Lao Wai Jazz Note. The Life of an Expat Jazz Musician in China 老外爵士音乐博客. Friday, February 6, 2009. The band (minus drummer 小伟) just got back from our Chinese New Year vacation in Xinjiang. I've got no music news to report as our instruments were collecting dust the whole time, but the trip was incredible. I'm a bit exhausted after a 48 hour train ride so I'll elaborate more in the near future. In the meantime check out some pictures. Would you be interested in blogging on our website? Only a few word...
The Lao Wai Jazz Note: December 2008
http://joshisjazz.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
The Lao Wai Jazz Note. The Life of an Expat Jazz Musician in China 老外爵士音乐博客. Wednesday, December 31, 2008. Wow, Chengdu Is Ready For Its Subway. For the past few years a subway system has been under construction here in Chengdu. It is projected to be completed by 2010 but this overwhelmingly crowded city is more than ready for it now. While I'm sure I will miss the Pay-Per-View quality bouts right in front of me, I think I'm ready for this subway system. I really enjoyed the smooth metros of Shenzhen...

The Lao Wai Jazz Note. The Life of an Expat Jazz Musician in China 老外爵士音乐博客. Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Saturday, September 27, 2008. A Different Kind of Gig. Chengdu presents a very unique opportunity for foreign musicians- a special kind of gig, not so much concerned with music as it is image. Specifically, these gigs demand faces with western features. Monday, September 22, 2008. I'll post a couple pictures from our show soon. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Chinese Law Prof Blog.
The Lao Wai Jazz Note: New Chinese Blog
http://joshisjazz.blogspot.com/2009/02/new-blog.html
The Lao Wai Jazz Note. The Life of an Expat Jazz Musician in China 老外爵士音乐博客. Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Another "Jia Shi" said. As a person in China who shares your first name, I'm curious about the selection of Chinese characters used to make up your name "jia shi". I've been called "jia shi" for a couple years now, but they've never written it like that. Is the "mao" a necessary part of the name and is there any significance in meaning to the whole thing? The Lao Wai Jazz Note: Xinjiang Trip - Part 1

The Lao Wai Jazz Note. The Life of an Expat Jazz Musician in China 老外爵士音乐博客. Friday, February 27, 2009. Xinjiang Trip - Part 1. The following clip is one I filmed in Bole, Xinjiang. It's a small city right near the Kazakh border, about an hour away. In fact two of our hosts (piano player Larry's sister and brother in law) worked as customs agents at the border.* While in Bole we were put up in the government hotel that is specifically used to house the customs officials. Ps - i'm a hard-ass. It is very d...
The Lao Wai Jazz Note: Stratification of Jazz Listeners in China
http://joshisjazz.blogspot.com/2009/02/stratification-of-jazz-listeners-in.html
The Lao Wai Jazz Note. The Life of an Expat Jazz Musician in China 老外爵士音乐博客. Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Stratification of Jazz Listeners in China. G E Anderson - -. When I lived in Chengdu in the mid-90s, I noted similar reactions. Our Chinese audiences loved our pop/rock, but they weren't sure what to make of our jazz. As for the foreigners in your audience, I would guess that the kind of person who willingly leaves the comfort of his home to travel to Chengdu has pretty eclectic taste in music.
