Brentwood Reflections: Civilian Volunteers, Civil Defence, Propaganda, Resources and Rationing - War Years 1939-1945
http://brentwoodreflections.blogspot.com/2011/08/civilian-volunteers-civil-defence.html
Tuesday, 2 August 2011. Civilian Volunteers, Civil Defence, Propaganda, Resources and Rationing - War Years 1939-1945. Soldiers were never very keen on kit inspections, it was a boring routine. After Dunkirk, many of these soldiers were back in England a few months later, when France collapsed. A great many of these Territorial Army soldiers spent the rest of the war years in German prisoner of war camps. Another Ministry of Information poster that appeared everywhere was the wording "Coughs and Sneezes ...

Brentwood Reflections: Popular Music and Radio Broadcasts - The War Years 1939-1945

Monday, 1 August 2011. Popular Music and Radio Broadcasts - The War Years 1939-1945. Glen Miller was not only a great dance orchestra, he also produced great swinging numbers, two of these remain my favourite records today, the "Anvil Chorus" and "Tail End Charlie". You could picture her with a mop and bucket and a huge feather cleaning stick. Following up with another catch phrase "Can I tickle you now Sir? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Brentwood Reflections: Coronation Rehearsals
http://brentwoodreflections.blogspot.com/2011/08/coronation-rehearsals.html
Wednesday, 3 August 2011. In 1936 the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was imminent. Peter Wood, the son of one of the Warley Hospital charge nurses was a member of the Westminster Abbey Choir at the time. Peter was very often seen climbing over the fence near my house on his way to the Coronation rehearsals. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Brentwood Reflections: The Family Doctor
http://brentwoodreflections.blogspot.com/2011/07/family-doctor.html
Sunday, 31 July 2011. In the 1930’s my Doctor was Doctor Miller who kept surgery in Warley Hall on the corner of Avenue Road. His able dispenser was Mr. Warner who applied all the dressings to your wounds. Mr. Warner was a very friendly man but if you cried when removing dressings, he would tell you not to be a cry-baby, that was to boys of course. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Brentwood Reflections: Motor Car Dealers and Garages from the 1930s and 1940s
http://brentwoodreflections.blogspot.com/2011/08/motor-car-dealers-and-garages-from.html
Thursday, 4 August 2011. Motor Car Dealers and Garages from the 1930s and 1940s. Garages were plentiful, "Rippons" in Brentwood High Street was one of the larger premises, with a showroom and a repair workshop which went back half the length of St. Thomas‘ Road, I remember the floor being black with solid grease. Many a Brentwood school leaver served their Motor Mechanic apprenticeship at the garage. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Outdoor Swimming Pool in North Road. One familiar sight in Brentwood ...

Brentwood Reflections: Watching Steam Trains
http://brentwoodreflections.blogspot.com/2011/08/watching-steam-trains.html
Tuesday, 2 August 2011. In the middle 1930's one of those boyhood pastimes was watching the steam trains making their way up the famous Brentwood Bank. Two of these famous locos were the stream-lined Cressly built “City of London" and the "Eastern Anglian". Both these trains, pulling highly polished coaches of a light oak colouring were a wonderful sight to see. During the early war years, I believe they painted them black. I never researched what happened to these two fine locos. In the 1930s Brentwoods...

Brentwood Reflections: Bicycles and Bike Shops from the 30s and 40s
http://brentwoodreflections.blogspot.com/2011/08/bicycles-and-bike-shops-from-30s-and.html
Tuesday, 2 August 2011. Bicycles and Bike Shops from the 30s and 40s. My first grown up bike which I used was a "Royal Enfield" touring bike which my father had bought at Hibbards Market in Rose Valley. My very first bicycle which I had given to me when I was 5 years old was a Selfridges own brand. Road at that time, If I had done it today, heaven knows what would have happened. My first solo was part success, but to the present day I would rather cycle miles than walk a mile. Another bicycle shop in the...

In April 1947 I had been in the Air Training Corps No.1483 Brentwood Squadron for 4 years. lt was a wonderful 4 years of youth training which I enjoyed very much, and with the approaching call up for National Service, I had a better chance of serving in the Royal Air force. The final tour party was:. One week before we left Jack Overall was married, but he still made the tour! Mr Andrews (Assistant Warden). On Wednesday we paid a vis...
