Out of the depths. Wednesday, March 31, 2004. CURRENTLY LISTENING TO: The Moody Blues’ boxed set TIME TRAVELER. During their peak years from 1967 through 1982 they were one of the very best progressive rock bands, tending more towards the softer end of the rock spectrum, but no less innovative because of that. Posted by adamosf at 3:53 PM. Saturday, March 27, 2004. About ten years ago, Aunt Chris learned he had cancer, but apparently he survived it, and hopefully is in good health. He was a good doct...

Out of the depths. Thursday, April 29, 2004. I’m still reading WORLDS THAT WEREN'T. Harry Turtledove’s Daemon was an enjoyable romp, but it was not as thought-provoking as Gentle’s story. The combined effect of the two stories though was to raise the following question: WHAT IS ALTERNATE HISTORY? So, is it sufficient that alternate history be a surface description of a story, or does it require a change which lies at the story’s philosophical heart? Posted by adamosf at 4:27 PM. Out of the depths. Sunday, February 29, 2004. Fridays were always meatless so we had pasta faggioli or lentil soup or spaghetti and oil or homemade pizza, baked very thin in my mother’s family’s Neapolitan style. That was before pizza became an American staple, so that most of our non-Italian acquaintances had never even tasted pizza. Easter is still one of my favorite holidays because of the pizza ghena. Cathy, this blog's for you ). Posted by adamosf at 1:00 PM. Friday, February 27, 2004. FANTASY and S...

Out of the depths. Monday, May 31, 2004. I don’t generally socialize much, being too preoccupied with reading and writing to waste a lot of my precious free time. The reasons I joined science fiction fandom originally in the late 1960s, and again in the late 1980s after a dozen years away, were social reasons. I’ve made a lot of friends through my fanpublishing, and I’m very pleased with it. Posted by adamosf at 3:19 PM. Friday, May 28, 2004. I like to select my summer reading ahead of time, not for any ...

Out of the depths. Sunday, October 23, 2011. I got back from vacation just in time to see two consecutive issues of the local newspaper the Newark Star-Ledger. Why would a supposedly independent newspaper be so rabidly anti-teacher? One possibility is that the Star-Ledger. And the hedge fund manager it supports, believe there cannot be anything bad about removing tenure and instituting merit pay. But briefly think about the following:. Merit pay would be determined by administrators, who currently have n...

Out of the depths. Saturday, January 31, 2004. Thursday night was the annual BAMBOOZLED at PHS. That’s a game show pitting teachers versus students. The teachers are selected by vote of the student body and since honors students are the ones who generally attend the event, they want to see their own teachers participate. So for the third year in a row I was suckered into playing. At least I did not embarrass myself! Posted by adamosf at 6:55 AM. Wednesday, January 28, 2004. The weather forecast was corre...

Out of the depths. Thursday, November 03, 2011. New Jersey recently offered Goya Foods a $81.9 million tax incentive to move its operations to to Jersey City from Secaucus. According to Economic Development Authority Executive Director Caren Franzini, This is about retaining jobs. Yes, we would like to add new jobs, but we also must keep jobs here. How many jobs are at stake here? According to the Star-Ledger. 166 jobs for $81.9 million? That means the state is paying $493,373.494 for each job? I haven&r...

Out of the depths. Tuesday, October 04, 2011. The typical Republican voter and the typical resident of New Jersey do not usually have a lot in common, since New Jerseyans tend to be independent voters, perhaps slightly leaning toward the Democratic party. But recently the members of those two groups have been sharing the same concern:. Is Chris Christie going to run for president in 2012? Posted by adamosf at 6:43 AM. Out of the depths. Sunday, August 29, 2004. We did not give up our dinner though. When we all dried off, we met at Frank’s Pizza for a delicious Italian meal. Hey, food is more important than the pool or staying dry anyway! All of you returning to school this week: have a great year! I'll be discussing some of my activities here, and I'll welcome anybody else's experiences they might wish to share. Posted by adamosf at 12:00 PM. Wednesday, August 25, 2004.
