Brian Floca's Blog: Flying Clouds

http://brianflocablog.blogspot.com/2014/09/flying-clouds.html

Wednesday, September 24, 2014. I recently read and enjoyed Dare The Wind. And Emily Arnold McCully. A new book which tells how in 1851 Ellen Prentiss helped the clipper ship Flying Cloud. Make a record-setting run from New York to San Francisco — 89 days, 21 hours. I enjoyed the book because it’s a well told story, beautifully illustrated, on an interesting subject. I took a little extra pleasure from the book because a small drawing of the Flying Cloud. Appears in the front endpapers of Locomotive.

Friday, August 9, 2013. On almost every trip to the airport that I’ve made for the past eight or nine years, I. Ve found myself, at one point or another, gazing across the tarmac and thinking longingly of the book Five Trucks. Out of print and largely unavailable now for, well, eight or nine years. (Such a moment is sketched out here. And more about Five Trucks. It’s happy news for me, then, that Five Trucks. Land, sea, air, space, together at last! Getting the old gang back together. Thank you to the.

Noblemania: Only known surviving note that Bill Finger wrote

http://noblemania.blogspot.com/2012/06/only-known-surviving-note-that-bill.html

Author of books for all ages, speaker, and pop culture archaeologist. Thursday, June 14, 2012. Only known surviving note that Bill Finger wrote. Much has been made (by me, anyway) about how few photos of himself Bill Finger (uncredited co-creator of Batman) left behind upon his death in 1974. Early on, I realized something that was even scarcer: Bill’s handwriting. We have plenty of Bill’s writing, of course, but almost all of it is fictional (and typed). But what would a. Note that he wrote reveal?

Tuesday, July 8, 2014. New stuff: Graphite kids. Long overdue fresh post! My schedule's been a little chopped up lately, so there have been a lot of little drawings, some experiments, some outliers. Saturday, January 18, 2014. Rebuilding website = blog neglect. There's a ton of work from the fall that I still want to post (including some selections from the epic Instagram Inktober. Adventure that I went along for), but I'm in the middle of building a replacement for my ridiculously out-of-date website. So there's a little backlog. But it's coming! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Noblemania: Bill Finger named co-creator in DC Comics publications

Author of books for all ages, speaker, and pop culture archaeologist. Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Bill Finger named co-creator in DC Comics publications. Happy (what would've been your) 98th birthday, Bill. My gift: credit, in the form of the following list of statements acknowledging you as co-creator of Batman. All statements were either published by DC Comics or said by a DC Comics associate in good standing. 8212;Bob Kane, Batman and Me. 1989), page 44. 8212;Carmine Infantino, DC Comics Publisher 19...

Color My World: September 2014

http://colormyworldbyjen.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 18, 2014. Ummm, let me think about this.YES! So now the creative space is office space (but I still get to keep creative odds and ends in most of the drawers and cupboards). We went to Menards and bought tall book shelves, and husband put them together lickity-split! The doll house is daughter's that we were given second hand. She loves it and isn't quite ready to part with it yet, so it will stick around for a while. Having the piano gone has freed up quite a bit of space. I've been ...

Color My World: April 2015

http://colormyworldbyjen.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 30, 2015. We were in Walmart a couple weekends ago and darling daughter wanted to by a pair of 5$ canvas shoes to paint. Yes, to paint. She even used her own money. At home, she proceeded to paint her shoes. She worked on them all weekend long (2 hour stretches mostly) and by Sunday evening she had a one-of-a-kind pair of Harry Potter Shoes. I'm so proud of her for tackling this project, her creativity, and the fact that she finished the project! Friday, April 24, 2015. I'm sad to say tha...

Tuesday, October 1, 2013. Graphite Monsters from the Deep. Doing a studio cleanup after the end of a project, uncovered these graphite monsters from a while back, drawn in a very short but productive interlude back in my days at the Brooklyn Artists Gym (now Brooklyn Art Space. Noblemania: What Bill Finger left behind

http://noblemania.blogspot.com/2015/08/what-bill-finger-left-behind.html

Author of books for all ages, speaker, and pop culture archaeologist. Sunday, August 9, 2015. What Bill Finger left behind. In a way, it makes sense that the primary creative force behind Batman would be something of a mystery, but Bill Finger took that too far—or rather, circumstances (some but not all beyond his control) took that too far. To DC Comics, but DC declined. (Unbearable.) Presumably, Fred then tossed them. (Again unbearable. But understandable.). What of Bill’s did. What you'll find here.

Color My World: Our Gardens

http://colormyworldbyjen.blogspot.com/2015/08/our-gardens.html

Tuesday, August 11, 2015. Our gardens have been a work in progress for a few years now. I think we finally have them the way we want them. This is a step-by-step look at our progress. 2010 We called this "Spider Haven" it was insane how many nasty little spiders we had living in those rocks. Some were nice, Spindella types- Orb weaving garden spiders. Some were nasty black and brown ones with jointed legs and teeth. (I swear they had teeth). 2015 This year we ruffled up the soil and planted sod instead!

Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Busy With Black Work. In early September I got out my black work project book and stash of black work items and spent a couple of weeks catching up, fixing old mistakes and finishing some UFOs (Un-Finished-Objects). This is like the fifth bookmark in this pattern that I've done and once I get going I don't need to follow a paper pattern, which is nice. Here is a new design I'm trying out. It's not finished yet and I hope to have some time to work on it again soon. The first is ...

At the end of every good day I can look back on something created from pieces left in the wake of our travels to the next reflection or rest. At times it's fortuitous find, or discovery from determination. I've found nearly four decades of play and purpose by arranging and rearranging lines, colors and shapes to construct images. It's all here for the taking in and building on.
