Our visitor centre provides a rare chance to see sun bears in the forest. Open since 2014, we offer the chance to see rescued sun bears on their road to rehabilition, as well as local flora and fauna such as orangutans, macaques, squirrels, and diverse tropical tree species. Welfare and rehabilitation of sun bears are the first two pillars upon which our work relies. BSBCC is currently home to 41 rescued sun bears. Sun bears in the wild face many threats. Originally known as Tan Sri, which is the name of his owner from the Mini Zoo Hot Spring Tawau, he was then re-named as “Sunbearo” in recognition of all the enabling support that the company, Neways has given to the centre. Our partners and supporters. The little-known sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) is the smallest bear species and the best tree climber. Their fondness for honey means they are sometimes named ‘honey bear’ or ‘beruang madu’ in Malay and Indonesian. Once found throughout Asia, from India to Vietnam and China to Borneo, their numbers have decreased dramatically. There are currently 36 rescued bears living at the BSBCC, you can visit the bears. At our centre in Sepilok, Malaysia or discover more about sun bears.
