Monday, March 25, 2013 / Posted by PageOne /. Awhile back, I posted on my love of and fascination with Dick Luppi's album artwork. That post can be found HERE. His son was kind enough to comment, and he noted that I had overlooked Herbie Mann's Lp, "The Beat Goes On". In all my years of thumbing through records, I hadn't come across the this album by the well-know jazz flautist. Thank you, Christopher. I'm sorry for your loss. Your father was a talent. On The Road South. Texas garage bands in the 1960's. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Larry Wilson and The Continentals. I was recently very excited to discover that there was a rock n roll group who recorded a record in the 60's from La Grange, TX. I spent a lot of time in La Grange throughout my life as I was raised in Smithville, the neighboring small town just to the West on Highway 71. I was able to locate singer and band leader Larry Wilson and he sent me a brief bio on the band via email. Ur third record wa...

On The Road South. Texas garage bands in the 1960's. Monday, February 10, 2014. Here's a mystery record on Lamar McDaris' Pot Records label… Its by a group called The Synthetic Sound. There's a producer credit of A. Dicroce on the label side with the band's original composition- a pleasant sax-laden ballad called "I Must Go". The flip is a wild n wooly cover version of "Proud Mary". Or was this a short lived group with some of the guys from Thee or Chocolate Grapevine? Monday, February 3, 2014. Despite t...

On The Road South. Texas garage bands in the 1960's. Saturday, March 1, 2014. Jack Flanders recently wrote to me and asked if he could contribute a story on his 60's rock band from Waco. Of course! Below is the tale, in his own words…. Quiet Riots in old Waco, courtesy of The Grass Menagerie. Without fail, “Riot on Sunset Strip’’ would always incite mayhem of some order, according to band members.
