Karate Thoughts Blog: Passing of Sensei Pat Nakata
http://karatejutsu.blogspot.com/2013/02/passing-of-sensei-pat-nakata.html
1700 Posts. and Counting. Passing of Sensei Pat Nakata. I am very sad to report that my good friend and senior, Sensei Pat Nakata, passed away last week, on Thursday, February 7th. He was 68. Words cannot express my sense of loss and also my deep respect for and gratitude to Nakata Sensei. If his approach to Karate could be summed up in one word, it would certainly be: TRAIN. Tomorrow would have been the 50th anniversary of his dojo here in Hawaii. Charles C. Goodin. Posted by Charles C. Goodin. Karate J...

Karate Thoughts Blog: Look First...
http://karatejutsu.blogspot.com/2012/10/look-first.html
1700 Posts. and Counting. In kata, I often tell my students that they have to look first when changing directions. The explanation I usually give is, "What if it's a truck instead of a person. you can't block a truck! But the other day, I thought of another explanation. You have to make sure that you are blocking or striking the right person. You would not want to block or strike your friend or a loved one. So look first. It might be truck or an innocent bystander. Saturday, April 06, 2013. How I Train when I am not at the Dojo. I train differently outside the dojo than I do when I'm there. At the dojo I have the advantage of controlled conditions such as a flat floor, air conditioning, lots of open space, loose fitting clothing, no shoes, and a variety of willing training partners. It's important to practice karate in various places and ways in order to approximate different conditions that might occur in a realistic self-defense situation. Since I live in Florida...

Saturday, August 31, 2013. Carol Strickland, Nidan. This post is in honor of Carol Strickland. Carol was a senior member of our dojo until she tragically passed from the physical bonds of this earth due to a diving accident in the Florida Keys in 2010. Carol was preparing for her Nidan (2nd degree black belt) promotion, at the time. I would like to formally recognize Carol Strickland, posthumously, as a Nidan in Kishaba Juku Shorin Ryu Karate. What Karate has Done for Me. Little did I know at the time I ...

Tallahassee Karate Club: Learning to Relax
http://karatetallahassee.blogspot.com/2014/11/learning-to-relax.html
Sunday, November 30, 2014. For the last several years, I've been focusing on trying to do karate in a much more relaxed fashion. Fortunately, in 2010, one of our fellow Kishaba Juku practitioners made the journey to Okinawa again to train with Shinzato Sensei, and like those old Chinese Envoys who took the Quan to Loochoo (Ryukyu) hundreds of years ago, he brought back information on Sensei's latest advancements in his study of Karate. 50/50 stances (all stances derived from naihanchi). I will probably s...

Saturday, April 11, 2015. I've been working on #Naihanchi a lot lately, trying to incorporate Sensei's relaxed power principles into my routine. It's always hard to break old habits and do things a different way, but I usually learn something new in the process. Here's a video clip from 2006 doing Naihanchi when our Dojo was on Orange Avenue. Naihanchi Shodan 2006 - Orange Avenue Dojo. Fast forward a few years and here I am, doing Naihanchi again.this time in our new Dojo on Capital Circle NW. Naihanchi ...

Tallahassee Karate Club: Happy New Year 2014!
http://karatetallahassee.blogspot.com/2014/01/happy-new-year-2014.html
Wednesday, January 01, 2014. Happy New Year 2014! Hard to believe 2013 is behind us and we're almost halfway through the second decade of the 21st century! When I was a kid, I actually thought we would be living in space by now. Maybe I will see that in my lifetime. I would love to practice Naihanchi on the moon or Mars. 2013 was our 8th year training together as Tallahassee Karate Club at North Florida School of Aikido. We've had 8 great years of training together! And that is way too long! Happy New Ye...

Thursday, March 14, 2013. Makiwara practice is good for training koshi. Most people think it's for toughening the knuckles to be able to execute a strong punch, but really that's secondary to how useful it is for koshi training. The best self defense is to take care of yourself and learn to avoid things that can cause you harm. Wednesday, March 13, 2013. Paying attention to the little details is what makes your karate good. Sunday, December 23, 2007. Thinking of Okinawa: Group Shot. Traveling to Okinawa to do karate was a lifelong dream for me. I had talked about going for years, but the opportunity never really presented itself. When it finally did happen that I got to go, the trip exceeded all my expectations! I'm sitting here three years later, thinking of Okinawa, and hoping I'll be there again soon! Thinking of Okinawa: Sai. Thinking of Okinawa: In the Dojo. Thinking of Okinawa: Soba. A good end to a good day! Thinking...
