The current vines where planted on Burgherspost in 1999 and then again in 2000. We held the record for preparing and planting the most vineyards in the shortest time. Chenin Blanc (Bush vines). Burgherspost set aside roughly two thirds of the farm or 1 150 ha for the conservation of the critically endangered Cape Lowlands Fynbos. The reserve is registered with CapeNature as a Voluntary Conservation Site as part of the CapeNature Stewardship program. We have appointed an experienced, qualified conservation officer to manage the reserve and ensure that the rich and highly threatened biodiversity remains ecologically functional and protected for future generations to enjoy. From mid-August to the end of September, the West Coast of South Africa probably has the most amazing show of wild flowers to be seen anywhere in the world. The Darling area specifically has an interesting combination of different soil and landscape types leading to an incredibly diverse floral community with over 180 rare or endangered species. The Iris family is especially well represented and includes bulbs like Gladiolus. Spp (pypies), Romulea. Spp (froetang), Babiana.

A Pittsburgh family living in the Netherlands. December 25, 2011. We leave the Netherlands in a few days and I would be terribly remiss if I didn’t write something about windmills! These are probably the most well-known symbols of Holland — up there with wooden shoes, tulips, and blue-and-white Delft pottery. They are really lovely and worth an entire photo study. Ironically, we did not get a single picture of our family with a windmill the whole five months we were here! This is how we saw most windmills.
