Tuesday, June 14, 2011. The Cold Water Close to Home. Above is a photo of my friend Mike with a little rainbow caught after first ice out in early March of 2010. Above is a photo of Belle standing along the Rifle River. Another small bow caught in the Rifle while targeting steelhead. During the late spring and summer months the small mouth and rock bass move into the lower sections of the river in large numbers and for those of you who love to chase bass the Rifle lodges some very nice size fish! Last ye...

I can't say weather or not the guys got their shanty or if mother nature took it since I had taken an alternate route home since I had some running to do. I can however say when I crossed a bridge down stream the river was wide open and cranking! This photo should give you an idea. That pretty much sums it up.

Tuesday, April 24, 2012. Trout Opener is Only Days Away in Michigan! Trout opener is quickly approaching in Michigan! I've been receiving phone calls, text messages, emails, etc. It seems as though in the last week, everyone went from talking steelhead to plotting their opening weekend trout trips! Steelhead vs. Spring Streamer Fishing:. Trout fishing. Where it all began. YOU HAVE A FISH! This is where I realized Joe wasn't waiting for that tapping on the rod or the feel of tension of the line on his fin...

Spring Water: September 2011
http://ckanicki.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 23, 2011. My favorite time of the year is here! The rivers are loaded with salmon, the brown trout are getting their spawning colors, soon the steelhead will be entering the rivers below the dams looking for salmon eggs to gorge on, the ducks and geese are gearing up to make their annual trip south, and the whitetails are on the move! Swamps and duck habitat good bird numbers = more food for the predator population. THE BEST WAY TO KEEP THE POPULATION DOWN IS TO GUN EM' DOWN! If this up...

Spring Water: July 2011

Friday, July 29, 2011. August in just a few days? Summer is coming to a close. Little Manistee River Wier. Jason with a great hen that couldn't resist the Rapala he was dangling in front of her as she was making her way up the river to spawn. Truly an amazing fish! And I kind of assumed if I was in my kayak and hooked a big king she would have took me for quite a ride. It's hard to believe September is a month away! Fall in Michigan gives anglers and hunters so many opportunities to get out in the field!

Friday, May 10, 2013. The End of a Cold Winter and the Beginning of Dry Fly Fishing. Though no dog could ever replace Belle, it was evident she needed a companion to brighten her spirits and a minion to start taking over the hard labor jobs that are expected at the pond on days we hunt ducks both morning and evening. She knows her limits, but when it comes time to hunt they go right out the window and her determination and focus is fueled with adrenaline leading to aches and pains. One of my former cowor...

Friday, June 8, 2012. Small mouth and Rock bass on the Cass. Small mouth and Rock bass on the Cass:. The several inches of rain we received over Memorial Weekend really bumped up the water levels on the river making fishing tough as the water resembles chocolate milk. Hands down the top producer on this river is the Murdich Minnow! I actually just ordered another dozen from Great Lakes Fly in several different color variations. Insect Size Date Range:. Blue Winged Olive 18: April 15 to April 30. Brown Dr...

Tuesday, May 24, 2011. Welcome to my blog. Most which were well over 10 pounds. I plan on heading up to the Au Sable later in the week to beat the Memorial Day weekend crowd and hopefully find a few risers to cast some dry flies at. Reliable sources have informed me the Dark Hendricksons are slowing, but the Sulphurs, Light Hendricksons, and Mahoganies should be going strong pretty quick! Michigan Feathers and Fins.
