July 2012 NEWS: So Far this year we have released well over 350 butterflies into our environment starting in January. Of the new chrysalis that formed this summer, there have been 30 hatchings and releases in what we call a second flight. At this point we have approximately 900 viable chrysalis. This year we have been unable to keep a daily count of the hatchings and releases. Two pipevine swallowtails mating. Notice the unusual yellow spots on the male, the lower of the two. Daily Hatches for Pipevine Swallowtail, 2010-2011. Comment as of 4/4/11: Weather has played a significant role in the hatching and releases of this season: heat in January encouraged early hatching followed by extended, heavy rains. Although there are several dozen more that may hatch, we currently see none cruising the yard, as compared to prior years at this time when female egg-laying was very active.
