Directions from the North. Follow I-95 south through Portsmouth and take Exit 5 (Portsmouth, Newington). Soon after the exit ramp take another right (Bypass 1, Portsmouth). This will lead you onto the Portsmouth Traffic Circle. Take the exit marked North Bypass 1. Almost immediately you will come to the Portsmouth, Woodbury Ave. exit. Take this exit and turn right on Woodbury Ave. at the stop sign. Follow Woodbury Ave. 0.3 mile to the stop sign at the end of the street. Turn right onto Islington St.

In 1880 James Morley invented a sewing machine with which to attach buttons to high button shoes. In the ten years that he spent developing the machine, he discovered that he needed buttons of uniform size, which were not then available. So when he organized the Morley Button Sewing Machine Co. in 1890, located then in Beverly, Massachusetts, he began to make buttons as well in the small shingled building below. In 1986 the Irwins retired and sold the building to Jim Buttrick. Read the story of Morley.

Glenn Buhr (Genie award-winner and 4-time Juno nominee) is a singer/songwriter and guitarist/pianist; a powerful performer of his own music. Buhr and The Button Factory Band recently performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under conductor Bramwell Tovey during the VSO’s 2017 New Music Festival.
