Bygone Elegance: January 2015
http://bygone-elegance.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, 31 January 2015. I haven't had the chance to sew properly for months and I am nowhere near my goal of posting my backlog of un-shared costumes.BUT. I have decided to join The Historical Sew Monthly 2015. I am still not convinced that this is an entirely good idea considering the amount of studying I have to do and the fact that I have to produce a Masters dissertation by the end of August. However, it is something that I have always wanted to do. Anyway here is the list:. I already have some id...
Bygone Elegance: April 2014
http://bygone-elegance.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Friday, 18 April 2014. The Original Outfits - The Underthings. My first two Victorian gowns were made to attend the Llandrindod Wells Victorian Festival. I only had about three weeks to finish everything so I could only manage one day dress and one ball gown and the necessary underthings. As I have always loved the silhouette of cage crinoline skirts, I decided on the late 1850s as my time period and started my project by stitching open drawers and a camisole (which I now realise should be a chemise!
Bygone Elegance: February 2016
http://bygone-elegance.blogspot.com/2016_02_01_archive.html
Monday, 1 February 2016. No Smurfs were harmed in the making of this fabric.I promise! It's taken me a while to get round to posting about this, but last week I had some great fun dyeing my corsetry satin from white to blue. I wanted something a little more fancy for my 1880s corset. And, after looking at various originals. For inspiration, I settled on mid blue. Rather than buy a blue satin, I decided to use Vena Cava'. S cotton backed corsetry satin. Uh oh - pale purple fabric! The dried fabric - AFTER.
Bygone Elegance: December 2015
http://bygone-elegance.blogspot.com/2015_12_01_archive.html
Sunday, 27 December 2015. Countdown to New Year No3: Two 1940s frocks. And the black and red ensemble for a "Down in the Shelters" dance evening. Having said that, I have worn both of them since for other things too - I like wearing them so much! The pattern I chose also included a jacket which I made in black velvet - unfortunately in these pictures it is obscuring the beautiful sweetheart neckline of the dress. Still, I love these pictures. And that leaves just one more post to go in my countdown to th...
Bygone Elegance: Slow progress...
http://bygone-elegance.blogspot.com/2016/01/slow-progress.html
Saturday, 30 January 2016. I have been a little quiet for the past few days, partly due to a horrible cold and persistent headache. However, between trying to sleep off my headache and working my day job, I have made some progress on my 1880s corset. Hopefully I will get round to posting about this shortly to update you on my experiments with blue dye and pattern mockups. In the meantime, this is just a quick promotion for my Etsy shop. Where my girls' mid Victorian underwear is now for sale. The Prince ...

Regency and Historical Needlework. The Clandestine Regency Bonnet: A Quick Making-Of. Tuesday, July 14th, 2015. Without me noticing, the next exam season has crept up on me. So, the blogging and corset-making have fallen a bit short of late. But I am still here and was very happy to receive all the positive feedback on the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award. You guys are all amazing sewers and bloggers so it was really, really hard for me to stick to just ten nominations. :). Now, it was time to deci...

Regency and Historical Needlework. HSM Re-Do: The Finished Regency Ensemble. Thursday, December 31st, 2015. Finally, the dress is complete. I wore it quite extensively over the holidays and, just now, my dad volunteered to take some pictures for you. :) Now I can show it all to you, at long last. Yay! As for that, here are the two photos I liked best and the challenge details for the Historical Sew Monthly:. The finished early Regency gown. A look at the back (and out the window). And the back view.

Today marks the 200th anniversary of Waterloo, the great battle that sealed both the fate of Napoleon, and the fate of 19th-century Europe. For this very special occasion, I have decided to share a very special find with you. As opposed to my usual posts, it has little to do with historical fashion, or sewing. C W – One of Waterloo’s heroes. In the following, I w...

Regency and Historical Needlework. Gussets, Grommets and Cords: Some Novice Corsetry Advice. Friday, August 14th, 2015. Friday, August 14th, 2015. Please excuse the long quiet on the blog. As you can guess, I have thrown myself into making the corded Regency stays. While this project is really keeping me busy, it has actually made some good progress so far: The sixteen (! Gussets, as well as all the cording and grommets are done now. So far, no major disasters have occurred, either. They are finicky, the...
I Will Start My Corset … Tomorrow – Sewing Empire
https://sewingempire.wordpress.com/2015/06/08/i-will-start-my-corset-tomorrow
Regency and Historical Needlework. I Will Start My Corset … Tomorrow. Monday, June 8th, 2015. Wednesday, June 10th, 2015. The time has come: I am finally out of good excuses for not starting the Laughing Moon Regency corset. My motivator to get this project rolling at last is June’s HSM challenge, which is aptly named “Out Of My Comfort Zone”. Its goal is to make a fashion item from a period that is new to you, or employing a technique you have not used before. The LMM Corded Regency Corset pattern.
An Edwardian Apron How-To – Sewing Empire
https://sewingempire.wordpress.com/2015/05/15/an-edwardian-apron-how-to
Regency and Historical Needlework. An Edwardian Apron How-To. Friday, May 15th, 2015. Friday, May 15th, 2015. With the pinafore apron as good as finished, I am now taking a moment to tell you some more about its make-up. Since there do not seem to be that many Edwardian pinafore patterns around, this post will provide a brief mini-tutorial. Perhaps it will inspire some of you to create your own, very pretty, pinafore apron. :). So,why did we invent plastic-coated apron fabrics again? Instead of the Madap...

Now that the first batch of exams is over, I finally put the finished bonnet on my head and took a few photos for you. Until last week, I worked on the trimmings. I decided to keep them simple. When you look at the 1803 fashion plate I showed you in the making-of post. The almost finished fabric flower. The finished Regency bonnet. A better peek at the flower and trim. Tactel-nylon...

Bygone Elegance
Tuesday, 21 June 2016. The best of intentions.and a new project. And then life got in the way, as it invariably does. That said, there are things that are sometimes more important than sewing. Working and earning money to pay for the sewing to start with and needless to say looking after yourself, your home and the people you love do have to come first. To document this project I have set up a separate blog dedicated to "Becoming Victoria". The plan, believe it or not, is to post updates daily (or as...
