Medeival Craster - by Mary Craster

http://wecanmindthetime.org.uk/medeivalcraster.htm

Medieval Craster, Craster Tower and the Craster Family. The name was spelt Crawcestre until around 1500. It means Crow's earthwork (Crawe Ceastre) in the Anglo Saxon. Here the early Crasters are likely to have built their first, timber hall-house. Albert is not an Anglo Saxon name (he may have come from the Rhineland); he married Christiana from the North Riding of Yorkshire, and his son William succeeded to the Craster part of her estate. This did not involve forfeiture for the tenants. By 1278 all ...

Craster Living History - The War Years

http://wecanmindthetime.org.uk/war_years.htm

The First World War. My mother and father actually met here during the First War. My mother was here on holiday on the 4th August, 1914, the day War was declared and they met here at the end of the first War. He worked in the quarry with my dad, Benny, who was in the RAF. They both played football for Craster Rovers. Wartime in the Village. So in the Market Place in Stokesley at 5o'clock in the afternoon, nobody wanted four. However there was this butcher, his mother and daughter (the wife had died),...

Craster Living History - Lifeboat

http://wecanmindthetime.org.uk/lifeboat.htm

I'm really proud of what I do and the one time that I felt really important was the time when a small rowing dinghy was blown off Embleton bay, in a very strong westerly wind, father and four young children aboard. To bring those children back in safely and to see the look on the mother's face gives you an immense feeling of satisfaction. Craster Village Life & The Church

http://wecanmindthetime.org.uk/village.htm

The exact date of the exodus down to the haven is uncertain, probably about 1800. The haven was a natural harbour with two limestone islets (Muckle Carr and Little Carr) acting as breakwaters. By 1801 there were nineteen houses in 'Craster Seahouses', as it was called until 1828. It had a population of 100. The village was naturally divided into the north and south side by a stream known as Craster Letch. Extract from house deeds). The bottom row was built in 1933 and that is Heugh Road. The Breezes'...

Craster History - Farming Section

http://wecanmindthetime.org.uk/farming.htm

Starting work on farms in the 1940s. I went to 9 different schools. Whereas the fishermen stayed put, farm people went from farm to farm, till we came here, and I said to my father, that's the finish, I've had enough of this. (So you'd had that since you were a little boy you'd moved about? Craster Village and then West Farm). Memories of farm work. The stackyard (at Dunstan Square Farm) was filled with hen-houses, up this road were all hen-houses. The hens were free range and put in at night. We...They ...
