After hiatus, I hope to be back! – This Finngarian Mama

A Mama in Michigan. After hiatus, I hope to be back! January 29, 2015. January 29, 2015. It has been a long time since I posted! The past couple of years have been a whirlwind, and I am still recovering. Shortly after my last post we decided it was time to start the process of building a house. Ground-breaking happened in the summer of 2013 but it wasn’t any old “hey honey, let’s build a house”… it was “Let’s build a house! So where does that leave this blog? A Mama in Michigan. What fun is life if you can’t play in the puddles? March 11, 2013. Today we finally had a warm, sunny day. After the kids came home from school we decided to enjoy some of the warmer weather and sunshine. I cleaned up a bit of one of the flower beds that had thawed, I hadn’t gotten to taking care of it last fall. I was so surprised to find these! I only had my phone camera out today, not the Nikon, so the quality of these photos is not the best! March 8, 2013. March 8, 2013. I got som...

A Mama in Michigan. March 13, 2013. March 13, 2013. I had my volunteer day at Butterflies in Bloom again at Dow Gardens in Midland, Michigan earlier this week. I love how the exhibit changes each time I go. Midland kids didn’t have school that day so there were a lot of people there, but even while crowded, it is so peaceful. Here are a few photos I took this week! 8230;and the frog! There is a pond in the conservatory which is home to several frogs. This one was hiding under a lily pad. Musings From My ...

Notes from my garden – This Finngarian Mama
https://thisfinngarianmama.wordpress.com/2015/06/04/813
A Mama in Michigan. Notes from my garden. June 4, 2015. June 4, 2015. Today the flowers got some attention. It was windy as usual but warm enough for a tank top which felt wonderful. After I finished the front bed I went around to the back and gave the forget-me-nots a break from the weeds. They have mostly gone to seed now but there are still a few blossoms. My vegetable garden gave me a surprise yesterday! Guess what this is! This is a little tiny purple potato plant! View all posts by finngarianmama.

Our Kind of Vacation – This Finngarian Mama
https://thisfinngarianmama.wordpress.com/2015/07/06/our-kind-of-vacation-3
A Mama in Michigan. Our Kind of Vacation. July 6, 2015. July 6, 2015. The lower falls are a little smaller but there are boats to rent so you can paddle around below the lower falls. The water is brown from the tannins in it that come from the cedar trees on the river banks and watershed. The upper falls are pretty spectacular! The kids couldn’t believe it. They were pretty excited, and you can see why! There was time to play in grandma and grandpa’s creek…. All in all it was a good trip, with traffic th...

How To Make a Sourdough Starter « Tea & Cookies
http://www.teaandcookiesblog.com/2012/01/how-to-make-a-sourdough-starter.html
January 23, 2012. How To Make a Sourdough Starter. Okay, people. Let’s do this thing. Sourdough starter or bust! As I wrote in my last post. Sourdough bread gets its tang and lift from a starter of flour and water that provides a host for wild yeast and beneficial bacteria. First off: it turns out that we aren’t so much capturing wild yeast in the air. Maybe a little, but most of the yeast is already present in the flour. Because of this, it is recommended that you begin your starter with rye or ...So, f...

Working in the garden – This Finngarian Mama

A Mama in Michigan. Working in the garden. June 2, 2015. June 2, 2015. We live on a 12 acre parcel that is mostly open field. We had a lot of flexibility in deciding where to actually put the garden. We chose a spot where I knew the soil was soft and easy to work. We wound up tilling a 50 by 100 foot plot! It still seems very big but I am sure once the plants start to grow it will be a comfortable size. I'm a 40-something mom of two young children. I live in Michigan and these are my musings! 20,131 visi...

Early Summer (almost!) – This Finngarian Mama
https://thisfinngarianmama.wordpress.com/2015/06/17/early-summer-almost
A Mama in Michigan. June 17, 2015. June 17, 2015. This part of summer is my favorite. It is actually not officially summer for another week but this part of June is my favorite part of the season. It is usually not too hot yet, the garden starts to grow in earnest and early local foods finally become available. In a good way though! I bought 16 quarts (two flats) which is my usual purchase each year. Maybe next year I will be able to pick them from my own patch! The kids are out of school now and we are ...
