The Lord Geekington: Picture of the Indiscriminate Interval #000007 - Narwhal

http://cameronmccormick.blogspot.com/2011/11/picture-of-indiscriminate-interval_22.html

Friday, November 25, 2011. Picture of the Indiscriminate Interval #000007 - Narwhal. At the American Museum of Natural History. Narwhals are a bit strange even by cetacean standards. I'll let the title of this Tet Zoo article speak for itself: " A 3-m tooth that can bend 30 cm in any direction and is hypersentitive to salinity, temperature and pressure. and the sonic lance hypothesis. There are colossal amounts of soft tissue. In males. Fontanella et al. Humans (122 years) and Bowhead Whales (211 years?

The Lord Geekington: November 2011

http://cameronmccormick.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 30, 2011. Billfish Bills - What Are They Good For? In the prior article. I discussed long-beaked "dolphins" (Eurhinodelphidae) and noted that I couldn't find hypotheses on the function of their uneven jaws in the literature. aside from a weird proposal involving Skimmers. Atlantic White Marlin ( Tetrapturus albidus. And Marlins/Sailfishes/Spearfishes ( Istiophoridae. Are living sister taxa. In the clade Xiphioidea; while traditionally included in Scombroidei. And istiophorids look sup...

The Lord Geekington: To-Do List

http://cameronmccormick.blogspot.com/p/to-do-list.html

I'll finally get on the bandwagon (if I can get the page to work) and discuss some recent papers on clades I have an unusual fondness for (turtles, vultures, remipedes, loricariids, cephalopods, et cetera. Which receive little attention from the science blogosphere at large. I'm counting on you Google Scholar alerts! A sequel to my treatment of Heuvelmans' Many-Finned ( reports. I will utilize anecdotal data from LeBlond and Bousfield's. Cadborosaurus: Survivor from the Deep. So I'd like to see how big a...

The Lord Geekington: December 2011

http://cameronmccormick.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Saturday, December 17, 2011. Feresa: The Growling Wolf-Dolphin. The dolphin Feresa attenuata. Has been bestowed with dreadfully stupid common names. Feresa. Has been recognized as distinct from Orca. Since Gray (1871), which makes "Pygmy Killer Whale" both inappropriate and archaic. The alternative "Slender Blackfish" is actively misleading as the superficially similar Pseudorca. Is more slender (Reeves et al. 2002) and well-lit color photographs in Rossi-Santos et al. 2002), making it extremely poorly-k...

The Lord Geekington: October 2011

http://cameronmccormick.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 30, 2011. Picture of the Indiscriminate Interval #000006a. I am getting bored of 'Cadborosaurus', so before finishing the series, here is a mysterious object found on the shoreline near Independence Park, Bristol, Rhode Island. This object is very fragile and part of the anterior end has broken off; to make up for this complication, I feel obliged to hint that size is a major clue. Sunday, October 30, 2011. The Armchair Zoologist: December 2008

http://armchairzoologist.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 31 December 2008. The Blackbourne Pavilion at London Zoo. The Blackbourne pavilion has recently been refurbished. As one of the older buildings of London Zoo, it has been remodelled in an homage to the Victorian collector. Outside the entrance is an enchanting ‘steam powered’ clock that does a display on the hour. Inside is a large oil style painting of a Victorian ornithologists study surrounded by silhouettes of various species of bird. Personally I found the Pavilion a very good reconciliat...

The Armchair Zoologist: October 2008

http://armchairzoologist.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Monday, 27 October 2008. Out of the Armchair. And into the Deckchair. Any way we got to Wadi Tarabat and set up the light trap (and the deckchairs). It was fairly simple; consisting of two white sheets on the ground with a double bulb, which gave out UV and visible light, in the middle. Due to the breeze we did not get any large beetles (which Mike, the beetle expert, was hoping for) but there were other moments of interest. Picture and text by Brigitte Howarth here. The Armchair Zoologist: April 2009

http://armchairzoologist.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Monday, 27 April 2009. Quirks and Quarks on CBC Radio 1. The presenter Bob Macdonald is excellent, he does not patronise the audience and is an intelligent interviewer who comes across as genuinely interested in the people he interviews, and doesn't just act the 'everyman journalist talking with those crazy egg head science people' which can happen in some science journalism. Here is an extract from a January show. Listen to the whole segment here. Links to this post. Thursday, 23 April 2009. If you are ...

Wednesday, 26 March 2008. The Tower Menagerie- Thomas Hahn. The Menagerie at the Tower of London lasted nearly 600 years and served as both a source of income and a place to deposit royal presents. In this book Thomas Hahn explores both the events around the tower and the changing attitudes towards animals from the 13th Century right up until 1835 after the advent of the Zoo in Regent's Park. Site, Place, Context. Wednesday, 4 February 2015. Less of a Progress Report more of an Update. So, having completed 3 of my planned 4 figures, I was rather pleased with progress in that it'd gone by faster and in a less stressful way than what I first imagined. Freedom to pose in whichever way I desire, no worrying about weight and gravity, the possibility of the piece working, or not. A much more liberating 4th figure idea. Friday, 30 January 2015.
