Canadian Bento: I'm glad I did that!

http://www.canadianbento.blogspot.com/2008/07/im-glad-i-did-that.html

Its a regular update about what I've made for lunch for my man and I. Celebrating the ancient art of Japanese bento boxes, with what ever foods tickle my fancy. Tuesday, July 29, 2008. I'm glad I did that! I didn't really feel like making lunch tonight, but now that its all locked and loaded to go, I'm glad I did. I should remember that on future days where I feel less than motivated. Features include turkey kolbassa (that's how it was spelt on the package) and hard boiled eggs. July 31, 2008 at 10:41 AM.

Canadian Bento: Spebento!

http://www.canadianbento.blogspot.com/2008/07/spebento.html

Its a regular update about what I've made for lunch for my man and I. Celebrating the ancient art of Japanese bento boxes, with what ever foods tickle my fancy. Monday, July 21, 2008. I've been calling this spe-bento in my head all night. Cause I'm quite silly. Inside the shaker bear is some grated cheese. Can I just say, berry season is my favourite season of all the seasons? Oh, it looks fabulous. Is that yellow zucchini in the sauce? Berry season is in the spring here. Our berries are over. :(.

Friday, May 16, 2008. Including, an adorable little box with a racoon on the cover that featured half a sandwich, a Babybel, some crackers, napkins and a piece of chocolate. It was bento-licious. Sadly, I didn't take the camera. So this picture of Mr. Porter will have to do. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Lunch in a Box.

Its a regular update about what I've made for lunch for my man and I. Celebrating the ancient art of Japanese bento boxes, with what ever foods tickle my fancy. Wednesday, January 30, 2008. An experiment reaches fruition. Tuesday, January 29, 2008. Lots of exciting Bento Action. I also successfully re-created the scattered sushi bento I made with my friend (this photo is of the original) and made one that was really pretty featuring leftover rice noodle salad, which received some constructive criticism -...

Tokaido Notebook: August 2008

http://tokaidonotebook.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

Life on the Road. Sunday, August 31, 2008. Iced coffee is something I came to much later in life. In Vietnam, you need it to get through the day. The heat saps the energy right out of you. The only way to deal with it is with long naps and the rocket fuel locals call coffee. Want to try some? Toss it back in a few gulps, and be prepared to knock several items off your to-do list. Sunday, August 24, 2008. Best Spring Rolls Ever. It's a bold claim, I know. Now, when you think of spring rolls, your mind mig...

Tokaido Notebook: March 2008

http://tokaidonotebook.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Life on the Road. Tuesday, March 25, 2008. My rice isn't confused, it's just mixed up. Is a dish I fell in love with in when I was living in Korea. Beloved of schoolchildren and English teachers across the country, it's a one-bowl dish of rice topped with various vegetables, beef, gochujang, and a fried egg. It can be served in a stainless steel bowl or a stone crock that's been heated on a burner - in which case it's called dolsot bibimbap. And several side dishes ( panchan. Enoki mushrooms, and bean sp...

Tokaido Notebook: Morning Markets: Takayama

http://tokaidonotebook.blogspot.com/2008/09/morning-markets-takayama.html

Life on the Road. Wednesday, September 24, 2008. I have a full report on all the beef we ate there over on eGullet, but I wanted to talk about the gorgeous produce I saw in the morning markets. I go on a lot about the produce we pick up cheaply at Ofuna market. But what I get there is nothing on the gorgeous fruits, vegetables, and flowers I saw here in the mountains. There are two morning markets: one in front of the jinya. Dango are another local specialty - balls of sticky rice, called mochi. I got th...

Tokaido Notebook: October 2008

http://tokaidonotebook.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Life on the Road. Wednesday, October 15, 2008. Miso soup, my way. Miso soup: comforting; warm; and importantly - cheap. So here it is. I had some small-batch miso (hatcho and aka) from a small soybean shop in Takayama. That had a nice depth of flavour. But if you have regular miso on hand, that's fine too. Don't worry about it too much. I also had some chili oil made from Takayama chilis and some of the shichimi togarashi I got there, as well, that I used as a garnish. My home-made chili oil:. As for the...

Tokaido Notebook: Ofuna Market

http://tokaidonotebook.blogspot.com/2008/05/ofuna-market.html

Life on the Road. Sunday, May 25, 2008. Street markets like this one were common when we lived in Vietnam, of course - supermarkets being the exception to the rule there- but even most neighborhoods in Korea still had a local market. Not so here in the Tokyo area - at least as far as I've seen. Going to the market is a great chance to practice basic speaking in Japanese as well, so we thought it would be fun. We went through a few of the vegetable stands, where they were offering a much wider range of ve...

Tokaido Notebook: Ginger Eggplants

http://tokaidonotebook.blogspot.com/2008/07/ginger-eggplants.html

Life on the Road. Sunday, July 27, 2008. Eggplant, as you know, is one of my favourite. So when the summer's first eggplants appeared on our local vegetable stand this week, I turned to my copy of "Washoku" for guidance. The author gives several eggplant recipes, taking seasonality to a new level by calling for eggplants from different parts of summer. I chose a recipe for eggplants cooked with ginger, hoping to recapture some of the Hanoi magic. July 29, 2008 at 11:06 AM. Subscribe To Tokaido Notebook.

Life on the Road. Tuesday, September 30, 2008. Okay, it's not really a salad. You can use buttercup squash, if you like). 1/4 sweet squash, like kabocha or buttercup, peeled and cubed. 2 tablespoons fresh parmesan cheese, grated. Fresh ground black pepper. Wow, sounds good Erin.we'll try this weekend lots of squash out now.Mum made some Leek and Potatoe soup last weekend.some Good! October 2, 2008 at 4:03 AM. Thanks for the shoutout! Tokaido Notebook: Green Beans, a couple of ways.

http://tokaidonotebook.blogspot.com/2008/06/green-beans-couple-of-ways.html

Life on the Road. Wednesday, June 11, 2008. Green Beans, a couple of ways. The New York Times has a great article. Last month, I posted on the sorts of side dishes. The second recipe I found over at - Just Bento! For green beans with carrot and ginger. Incorporating more vegetables into your life is such an easy and effective change. I love things like that. I am well into my summer vegetable infatuation. In this climate, you have to enjoy them while they are decent! June 16, 2008 at 9:50 AM. Eggplant, A...

Tokaido Notebook: Eggplant, Aubergine, Ca Tim, Nasu....

http://tokaidonotebook.blogspot.com/2008/06/eggplant-aubergine-ca-tim-nasu.html

Life on the Road. Friday, June 20, 2008. Eggplant, Aubergine, Ca Tim, Nasu. I love eggplants cooked almost all ways, but one of my favourite uses for eggplant is baba ghanouj. I could eat whole tubs of the stuff back in Canada where it was dangerously located in the dip aisle of most major grocery stores. Suddenly, our first Christmas in Korea, we realized that eggnog would be completely unavailable to us. Eggnog! Christmas simply wouldn't be Christmas without it. Like, from scratch? Recipe, which seemed...

Life on the Road. Sunday, June 29, 2008. Nikko and Shojin Ryori. After an incredibly busy few weeks at work, it was a relief to get some time off, and take our first trip out of the city since the fall. We took a train to Nikko. A world heritage site and national park, home of the Toshogu. A cosy and relaxed hostel with a selection of Spanish red wine and a huge music DVD collection - it was like visiting my parents! Not that vegetables aren't usually available, but.her flexibility does her credit, I...
