under the lilacs: October 2005

Monday, October 31, 2005. Thanksgiving on hallow eve day. I wanted to post a family picture. I can see it vividly in my head, and must have seen it recently, but in the chaos of boxes that passes for the family archives, I cannot find it. Obviously, my next project is to bring some kind of order to this, if only so I can post what I'm seeing. But it was a gentle reminder of my grandmother's early life on a turn-of-the-century farm. Posted by Kathy O'Brien at 11:10 am. Saturday, October 29, 2005. Is just ...

Monday, May 29, 2006. All photos by: Tampen. While searching for just-the-right photo for my last post, I came upon the photographs. Of Tony Allen-Mills, or Tampen, on Flickr. I don't think I'll have to look beyond his portfolio in the future. Allen-Mills is a journalist. Who has taken up photography only recently, but his output is prodigious, and that is a gift to anyone who is touched by his photos. He seems to have one of those lives that can invite envy, with a lovely family. Sunday, May 21, 2006.

Friday, April 21, 2006. The most recent film I saw at the Goethe-Institut Toronto's. Monday night tributes to soccer and film, was. The 1993 Guinean film. Directed by Cheik Doukoure, tells the story of a young 12-year-old boy, dirt-poor like the majority of his compatriots, who believes he is destined to become a world-class soccer player. Bandian keeps his money with a sympathetic European doctor from Medecins Sans Frontieres. Even though French colonialism has left its language with the land. The c...

Saturday, December 31, 2005. When I was a teenaged babysitter, I spent a New Year's eve or two reading the poetry of Robbie Burns. Blame it on an infatuation with all things Scottish. Why no one has made a movie of the life of the Scots' bard, that I'm aware of, is indeed a mystery. Even though he's Irish, could play him. 2005 has not been an easy year, but it has not been a bad one. Here's raising a glass to what has been and what is to come! And for auld lang syne, my jo,. For auld lang syne,. I wasn't...

Friday, January 27, 2006. At some time I had bought my mother a Richard Simmon's tape - Richard Simmons and the Silver Foxes. She never used it and I think scoffed at me when I originally purchased it for her, an exercise video for seniors. Though my mother had never shown any interest in this video before, she found it quite humourous now. I'm not sure if it was the Silver Foxes in their pastel workout suits. Have to build up slowly so I can attempt "Sweatin' to the Oldies - 2.". I realize my last post ...

Two media outlets sympathetic to the Falun Gong, banned in China, have been denied media accreditation for a dinner gala here in Toronto, to be attended by President Hu Jintao. Thursday, November 24, 2005. The faint hope line". I, and about 10 other hopefuls, stood on a staircase at the Harbourfront Centre, in what the gentleman behind me called "the faint hope line". We were waiting, with quiet expectation, for the possibility that somehow the powers-that-be would allow us into the sold-out Joan Didion reading. Logical entreaties - "you could let us slip in the back, we won't take up much room", were answered with logical responses - "we've already added extra rows.". Despite ...

A canadian in cardiff. Boiling, simmering: Marseille bouillabaisse. Posted by Kathy O'Brien. On March 3, 2015. Graffiti as an art form in Marseille. Marseille is not necessarily touted as a prime destination in Provence where many search out the more pastoral lavender-encompassed villages. It has a ‘reputation’. For which it is famed. I have never been to New Orleans but I sense that the cultural mix that created its gumbo has a blood twin in Marseille. I wanted to go to the Noailles Market. The MuCEM &#...

A canadian in cardiff. Posted by Kathy O'Brien. On October 28, 2014. In the spring when I travelled down to Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre. Area of Liguria, Italy, I wanted to do a kind of Grand Tour of Europe, see as much as possible of countries I might not have the chance to visit. I began, after arriving in London from Cardiff by coach, with a rail/cruise option from Harwich to the Netherlands. I had done this once before on Stena Lines’ Rail and Sail. And had a miserable night. I was hoping tha...
