The Canning Doctor: May 2015
http://www.canningdoctor.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
My adventures with canning, cooking, foraging and do-it-yourself foodiness. Sunday, May 31, 2015. His morning I went out to check on the hive. I had thought that the amount of food I put out yesterday would last them for a few days. NOPE. It was all gone. I needed to refill it. What I don't know is, how long until they are able to forage for their own food? Saturday, May 30, 2015. Welcome to Bee Guardianship. Thinking it was too late to get them for this year. Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Duck Liver Pate and...
The Canning Doctor: Petit Fours, or, An Exercise in Frustration
http://www.canningdoctor.com/2015/05/petit-fours-or-exercise-in-frustration.html
My adventures with canning, cooking, foraging and do-it-yourself foodiness. Thursday, May 7, 2015. Petit Fours, or, An Exercise in Frustration. T's Nurses' Week. I work with a lot of nurses, right? So I thought I'd make something special for them. Inspired by the cupcakes with the candied violets (yes, it is ALSO Teachers' Week) I thought about petit fours. I researched various recipes, got the basic idea, and then set aside a couple of chunks of time today to get these made. I had 14 oz. of white ch...
The Canning Doctor: A Return to Nettle Wednesdays
http://www.canningdoctor.com/2015/05/a-return-to-nettle-wednesdays.html
My adventures with canning, cooking, foraging and do-it-yourself foodiness. Wednesday, May 13, 2015. A Return to Nettle Wednesdays. Round the stables, the spring greens became abundant in the last week or so. As I walked around today, I saw curly dock, dandelions, Japanese knotweed, wintercress, oregano, garlic mustard, and a few other greens I probably should be able to identify. Most of the greens had already flowered, making them bitter. But, today, I only had eyes for the nettles.
The Canning Doctor: Teacher Appreciation Week
http://www.canningdoctor.com/2015/05/teacher-appreciation-week.html
My adventures with canning, cooking, foraging and do-it-yourself foodiness. Tuesday, May 5, 2015. His week we celebrate all the teachers and staff in our community! I volunteered to help set up the brunch at the elementary school this morning, and to bring cupcakes to the middle school tomorrow. I thought I'd make my new favorite cupcake, from that white cake recipe. I used to make the checkerboard cake. Oh, except for this: I topped each one with a candied violet. Homemade, of course.
The Canning Doctor: October 2014
http://www.canningdoctor.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
My adventures with canning, cooking, foraging and do-it-yourself foodiness. Thursday, October 30, 2014. S has been mentioned all week, I had a plan to make a venison pie. I was following this recipe. Which I altered just a little bit. First of all, the juniper was OUT. (You can find out why here. Ah, the pastry. I had been trying to find an occasion to make a savory pie, so I could experiment with using the rendered duck fat to make a savory crust. Now was my chance! The filling before adding the beer.

The smooth stones in life: baby steps and comfort food
http://thesmoothstonesinlife.blogspot.com/2010/09/baby-steps-and-comfort-food.html
The smooth stones in life. This blog is to remind myself, and possibly others, to seek out and celebrate the many under-appreciated and over-looked little things in our lives. Thursday, September 16, 2010. Baby steps and comfort food. I’m working my way through my recent and very upsetting lack-of-enjoyment-with-cooking phase. After talking with a few of you about this weird empty-nest phenomenon, I decided to start back with the basics. So, this week I made eggplant parmigiana. The eggplant was from...

Two Boys and Their Moms: February 2012
http://aboyandhismoms.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Two Boys and Their Moms. Saturday, February 25, 2012. A few of our favorite meals. As I was making dinner tonight and looking forward to eating it because it's one of our favorite meals, I decided that maybe I'd share them here because everyone needs some delicious and easy meal ideas! And one thing all our favorite meals have in common is that they're pretty simple and easy to make. Cliché perhaps, but sometimes it is the simple things that are the best. Image from A Chow Life. That's what I thought!
Two Boys and Their Moms: Um, no, it's not twins.
http://aboyandhismoms.blogspot.com/2012/07/um-no-its-not-twins.html
Two Boys and Their Moms. Saturday, July 14, 2012. Um, no, it's not twins. When people see a pregnant woman, sometimes they say silly thing. And their sense if personal space goes away. It's kind of funny. Thursday I was told I had a cute baby bump. This is acceptable. I am not going to complain if someone tells me I look great. Also don't tell me i don't look pregnant, even if I'm 6 weeks pregnant and don't. I probably think I do. July 15, 2012 at 1:18 AM. July 15, 2012 at 8:46 AM. They really do. :).
Two Boys and Their Moms: August 2013
http://aboyandhismoms.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Two Boys and Their Moms. Friday, August 30, 2013. I'm shy. Why are you laughing? You may have seen an article posted on social media in the last couple of weeks entitled 23 Signs You're Secretly and Introvert. A lot of people were commenting with things like, "yup, totally describes me to a T," "all 23 are spot on," etc. Since I was in elementary school I probably would have described myself as shy or introverted, and it was no surprise in 8th grade when we did the Myers-Briggs. One Foot in the Garden...: Irish Soda Bread - Part 2 (finally)
http://onefootinthegarden.blogspot.com/2012/08/irish-soda-bread-part-2-finally.html
Friday, August 3, 2012. Irish Soda Bread - Part 2 (finally). Way back in March. I made another loaf using vinegar and milk (I didn’t want to buy a quart of buttermilk and have to throw most of it out because, umm, yuck). The bread was delicious and had the right texture and density. This is what I learned:. The acidity of buttermilk is necessary to activate the baking soda. Not adding that acidity will leave the bread dense. Fresh, hot bread is the perfect vehicle for loads of fresh, homemade butter.
Two Boys and Their Moms: October 2012
http://aboyandhismoms.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Two Boys and Their Moms. Wednesday, October 24, 2012. Probably . maybe . well, we'll see. I am now about 37 1/2 weeks pregnant. 40 weeks is what they use to determine due date but 37 is considered full term (when the baby is developed enough to be unlikely to need any intensive care post-birth) but it's not unusual to go past your due date by a week or even more. So we're in a sort of limbo period. I had a punch list of things I wanted to get done once on leave:. Winterize the back yard. Come any time an...
Two Boys and Their Moms: Superstitious pigeons ... and parents
http://aboyandhismoms.blogspot.com/2013/01/superstitious-pigeons-and-parents.html
Two Boys and Their Moms. Monday, January 21, 2013. Superstitious pigeons . and parents. After Nate was born 4 years ago, a coworker of mine came to visit when he was around a month or so old. I must have told him something like "he slept n hours last night and during the day we had done XY and Z with him so we're doing XY and Z with him today so that he'll sleep n hours again! And he laughed and told me about Skinner's " superstitious pigeons. Of course, there are certainly some things that will affect t...

Laura & Mike's Road Trips
Laura and Mikes Road Trips. Wednesday, July 31, 2013. Steamboat Springs, CO to Estes Park, CO. And then it was on down and down the very windy road to Estes Park, which is touristy but not in an unpleasant way. Tomorrow we'll grab another pair of Junior Ranger badges and head off for the airport, hoping against hope that we see a Hawaii plate on our way. Rock Springs, WY to Steamboat Springs, CO. Now those people are gone, the forests are gone. Most disturbingly, the lush grassland that greeted the E...

The Canning Doctor
My adventures with canning, cooking, foraging and do-it-yourself foodiness. Sunday, March 18, 2018. Stuck In The House. Ell, not really. But close enough. Our bunny has been ill and I needed to keep a close eye on him after I brought him back from the vet yesterday. So I'm not planning on going anywhere. The youngerchild and I are working on a gladiator helmet for Latin class and I made chicken stock and soup. In the meantime, I keep checking on the bunny and hoping that he's starting to eat. Canning Dog Food
Canning Homemade Food for Dogs! Friday, February 3rd, 2012 at 10:12 AM. I bought some chicken on sale today and it was marked down 30%. The package is marked $17.35 so I ended up paying $12.14 for 6 bone in skin on chicken breasts. I use the breast meat for myself, and I will cut off the backs for the dogs. Sometimes I will freeze the backs in a ziplock bag, and other times like today I like to pressure can them. I’m going to walk you through how to do that. Here is the end result of what I am throwing a...

A Stitch And A Snip. A Hook and A Promise. Thursday, July 26, 2012. A photo by Sorcha.Larina. Hand grinding Winter White Wheat. Up close and personal. A photo by Sorcha.Larina. There is a slight learning curve to the grinder, but all in all I am very pleased with it. no worse than grinding beef for hamburger, and I think once I get used to it, churning out 6-8 cups for a batch of bread will be easy. Sunday, May 6, 2012. Note the plants still in the glass. Spread the cut greens on the dehydrator tray.
