Building a stitch and glue canoe

Building a stitch and glue canoe. Friday, May 3, 2013. So now what would I do differently next time. I learned a lot from building this boat. I suspect there will be a next one at some point and there are definitely things I would do differently. 1 I would not build a 10 panel plywood boat. For the amount of effort required I could have done a strip boat. 6 I should have used more lights when varnishing. There are a few sags and drips that I'm not too happy with near the shear line. The boat I built is e...

Building a stitch and glue canoe: Nearly forgot to mention how I decided what to build......

http://canoebuilder.blogspot.com/2013/04/nearly-forgot-to-mention-how-i-decided.html

Building a stitch and glue canoe. Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Nearly forgot to mention how I decided what to build. I had a solo canoe years ago from Blackhawk canoe.a Fishhawk. I loved the canoe and should have never sold it. It was very narrow and about 12' long. I knew I wanted a little longer boat this time so found the dimensions from the web, added a couple of feet and about an inch on the width. I found a guy in the Twin Cities called Eskimo Tom. Building a stitch and glue canoe: July 2009

http://canoebuilder.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Building a stitch and glue canoe. Sunday, July 5, 2009. It's been awhile.time for filleting. You can see the masked area in the bow. I first masked either side of the seam just even with the wire stitches. Then, I mixed up some epoxy and added wood flour. I mixed in enough wood flour to give a paste consistancy. Stiff enough to hold its shape when I made the fillets. Interestingly. Now, for the ugly. The first day I followed other instructions. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

Building a stitch and glue canoe: Strange warm day in November. Time for Gunwales

http://canoebuilder.blogspot.com/2012/11/strange-warm-day-in-november-time-for.html

Building a stitch and glue canoe. Monday, November 12, 2012. Strange warm day in November. Time for Gunwales. Once that was all done, I took off the gunwales and rounded off the edges with a 1/4" radius round over bit on the router table. I had trouble keeping wood in contact with the bit, but a couple of featherboards and my able daughter helped me to get it done. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Strange warm day in November. Building a stitch and glue canoe: September 2012

http://canoebuilder.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Building a stitch and glue canoe. Sunday, September 30, 2012. Glassing done.time to varnish. After glassing I also added two flotation tanks. They came out OK, but fitting all those compound angles is harder than you'd think. This weekend I varnished using a marine polyurethane. I ended up thinning it 1:7 with thinner just to keep the runs to a minimum. It isn't all that hard, but there is a lot of sanding involved; first with the epoxy (nice clear shine goes away! Canoe, Camp, Cook, Fish and Travel

A Chronicle of adventures experienced during canoe trips, camping trips, fishing trips and other travel excursions by a member of the "geritol set" or as some said, by an "old geezer", with occasional detours to my vegetable garden and to my kitchen because I like to cook. Thursday, June 11, 2015. Mexico - Veracruz - the second story. With Veracruz, VC, Mexico, being one of my favorite places in the world what better place to take my bride for our honeymoon? Magically, the flight was no longer closed and...
