Gerry gave the closing lecture at the Deaf Culture Festival in Stavanger on Saturday 22nd October. More than 500 deaf people attended over the weekend. Gerry Hughes : Challenge. Gerry Hughes was born profoundly deaf and uses British Sign Language (BSL) as his first language. Married to Kay, they have two bilingual daughters. The next challenge Gerry has set himself is to complete a solo circumnavigation via the five southernmost capes, a journey made famous by likes of Sir Francis Chichester and the legendary Sir Robin Knox Johnston. Gerry Hughes : Gerry's Life. Attended St Vincents School for the Deaf, Glasgow from the age of 3. At age 13 transferred to St Johns School for the Deaf, Boston Spa, Yorkshire. Struggled to learn to read and write until the age of 15. Attended Norfolk House, 6th Form College in Surrey in 1975. Attended Langside College, Glasgow, in 1979. Became the first deaf skipper to sail around the British Isles, in 1981. Qualified RYA Dinghy Instructor. Obtained a degree in Mathematics from the Open University, 1991.

Living at the foot of Africa. Wednesday, January 28, 2009. Willow and Chiara had friends over for a pony party. After much hard work by Claudia, Jackie and I, the event kicked off at around 3:30pm at Willow and Chiara's old school. I can't believe they are old enough to even be OLD GIRLS of a school - the wonderful Montessori in Oranjezicht. The kids all seemed to have a jol. As did the grown ups too by the looks of it!
