The spirit to climb. These posts are meant to illustrate climbs, as well as discuss ideas and thoughts from my past and present experiences. What I publish here will relate to climbing, mountaineering, mountain culture or mountain ecology. March 3, 2010. Cryophobia is a 225 meter route that looked menacing and foreboding the first time I saw it from Hydrophobia some years ago. “If people can find a way up that wall, what isn’t possible? The overhangs on the third pitch are intimidating obstacles! Leave a...

A Good Idea at the Time?: 07/01/2012 - 08/01/2012

Oh, now I understand. As I’m writing this it is proving awkward to hold the pen and I hope that the poisonous bite doesn’t kill me. A melodramatic sentence but in some ways I thought it would be quite a funny way to go and if you’re reading this I obviously survived at least long enough to type up my scribbles. I thought “look how flexible its, it can turn it’s head right round”. Caroline helpfully pointed out “What ever possessed you? Welcome back home. A massive crop of blackberries. And I'm not actual...

So this is the driest spring on record! There has been sunny weather for months. Then when I commit to try a bit of climbing………. it rained. (actually the other time I tried to climb in the UK in 2011 it also rained which, on that occasion, precipitated prussiking out of the Ruckle! Alex on the Ramp. On Wednesday all the climbing teams swapped round and I was with a different guest. Alex had led a handful of routes on gear before the meet but had been happy on an E1 he had strayed on to! From the trees bl...

Simon heading towards the slab I landed on later,. Ripping out what I thought to be a bomber hex, hitting. The slab and flipping upside down en route to landing. On the belay. At least I held my axes and got down safely. Jumping out of bed on Sunday for an early start didn't happen. I did meet Simon on time but was about the last thing that worked out right. Some things were avoidable: the forgotten head torch, the second attempt at driving up any icy slope, the hex placed sideways. The rest of the journ...

The swing
El retrato de una época. October 15, 2014. May 22, 2014.
