Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist. Friday, 27 December 2013. Seasons Greetings and Plans for the New Year. Well another year has passed and it’s that time of the year when one starts to think about the future. This year promises to be a busy one although I shall be reducing my OU commitments to at the most one 60 point course per year. The courses will consist of. Level 1 MST121 Introducing Mathematics Pass. Leve 2 MST221 Exploring Mathematics Distinction. M208 Pure Maths Grade 2. Not that I wont...

Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist. Sunday, 26 April 2015. M346 Linear Statistical Modelling. Well after two years absence from the OU I have decided to complete my BSc in Mathematics and Statistics under the old regulations I need to do two 3rd level statistics modules namely M346 Linear Statistical modelling and M347 Mathematical Statisitics and these need to be completed by 2017. Http:/ www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/examples/. The first half of Sheet 8a. The last problem has imtroduced me to a pheno...

Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist: November 2013
http://chrisfmathsphysicsmusic.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist. Tuesday, 26 November 2013. Result for M358 Quantum Mechanics. Well Results are out for SM358 quantum mechanics I got a grade 2 (just) actually the examiners this time were on the generous side. As I got 67% for the exam which technically should have been a grade 3 and 90% for the Assessment. It does seem a bit arbirtrary looking over the past courses. M208 I got 84% in the exam and averaged over 85% for the assessment and didn't not get distinction. Anyway onto ...

Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist: True Patriotism or Nationalism
http://chrisfmathsphysicsmusic.blogspot.com/2014/11/true-patriotism-or-nationalism.html
Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist. Saturday, 29 November 2014. True Patriotism or Nationalism. This rant is a lot less objective than I usually am but I am getting really sick of politicians and the press appealing to a bogus sense of patriotism and I despair of parties that should know better such as the :Labour party for abandoning core values of the basis of socialism such as that what ever country you come from shouldn't matter as to how you are treated. How many of those idiots who feel it n...

Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist: Orbitals
http://chrisfmathsphysicsmusic.blogspot.com/2014/08/orbitals.html
Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist. Sunday, 24 August 2014. The crucial point is however that when the electron either gains or loses energy that loss or gain in energy is fixed (quantised). However the electron does not 'jump' from one orbital to another what happens is that the probability density function changes in accordance with the appropriate function for that energy level. Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist: Grade 1 piano Resit
http://chrisfmathsphysicsmusic.blogspot.com/2014/11/grade-1-piano-resit.html
Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist. Thursday, 6 November 2014. Grade 1 piano Resit. Hi first of all apologies for not posting for a while. I guess without the pressure of OU TMA's there is not that much to post about. So I stumbled on most of the tasks I was asked to do but unlike last time I was able to recover. Is that enough to pass who knows hopefully yes but for me piano playing isn't a natural thing. I'll persist in practice and see how far I can go, until I really do hit a brick wall. Hi I'...

Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist: April 2014
http://chrisfmathsphysicsmusic.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist. Monday, 28 April 2014. Do Virtual particles exist. Well been having a ding dong with my bete noir on the physics forums about whether or not virtual particles exist. In my opinion they don't but unfortunately the popular physics literature abounds with such ideas and so the myth is generated that they actually do exist. A really good overview of why they can't really be said to exist is given here. I'll just summarise the salient points. DE dT = frac{h}{2 pi}$.

Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist: October 2013
http://chrisfmathsphysicsmusic.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist. Tuesday, 8 October 2013. As promised here is my summary (off the top of my head) of the questions and my responses to them. I think I'm on target for the top end of Grade 3 or if I'm lucky Grade 2 but it will only just get there. The first part was 10 out of 12 questions of which I answered 9 but some were only sketches. Got most of this out 4 marks say. Question 8 was fairly straightforward whether or not statements about the Bell Inequalities were true or fals...

Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist: Yet More Quantum madness the so called Cheshire cat
http://chrisfmathsphysicsmusic.blogspot.com/2014/08/yet-more-quantum-madness.html
Ramblings of a Short Fat Failed Physicist. Monday, 4 August 2014. Yet More Quantum madness the so called Cheshire cat. For those like me, who despair at the increasing tendency to the irrationality of the world, even in science. The recently published claim that it has been possible to separate out the spin component of a quantum object from it's spatial component can only cause one to wonder whether the world has gone mad. For those who aren't aware this BBC post is typical of the hype. The ontic view i...
