I am interested in human-centered design as it relates to product design, industrial design, and engineering. I love to make things with my hands, iterate variations on form, think critically about a person’s situation and needs, and use my analytic engineering skills to make a better, stronger product. Ario LED Lighting Competition. The Ario Lighting Competition, a student design competition, was a challenge to design light fixture to accompany a new LED light bulb. This bulb is different from other LEDs in that it will change color temperature throughout the day to be energizing (blue) during the day and calming (red) at night. The fixture was to be modern, innovative, and allow for use as both an ambient and direct light source. A red cord draws attention to an often overlooked component.

In Spring Semester 2014, I taught a workshop at Yale’s Center for Engineering, Innovation, and Design about the methods of making 3D objects from flat materials, including CNC machining, laser cutting, and simple prototyping with foam core board and exacto knives. In spring semester of 2015, I took a class called Drawing Architecture, which taught both freehand drawing and hard line drafting, with pencil, charcoal, and graphite. For my final project, I was allowed to draw two iconic industrial designs, the KitchenAid Mixer and the Juicy Salif by Phillipe Starck for Alessi, rather than a building. Of all quick-prototyping methods, my favorite is the laser cutter. I love the challenge of turning flat material into something 3D with clever slots and locks. Below are several objects, some useful and some decorative, made with flat plywood, CAD programs like Solidworks and Corel Draw, and our laser cutter. A tea rack I designed for my dorm room.
